Watch 'Nunchaku Santa' in action!

When you begin your post saying essentially, "I know this doesn't belong here..."

Well, maybe you should take your own advice.

Chuck, I don't want to interfere with your role neither to offend you.
I recognize that this thread may look "out of the matter". But I'm interested in that post because I see that other "balisongers" like nunchaku... and I'm sure other weapons like tonfa, sai, kama, emei thrust (shobo, see : http://www.balisong.net/en/beyond.htm)...
ie all the weapons which allow fun manipulations.

This is a good start for a survey :
- How many of us are only interested in balisong flipping ?
- How many of us are also excited by rotating their pen around the thumb, handling a nunchaku at high speed, learning fancy ways to draw a sword, drawing a gravity knife in one fast wrist move, manipulating kama like Jimmy Pham, throwing their Glock :-) behind the shoulder and retrieve it in the other hand... etc etc etc ???

I am quite in the latter region

I'm not opposed to the odd off-topic thread. And I'm not opposed to the occational exploration of other common interests we may have.

Just don't make a habit of it

Keep in mind, also, that I don't want to alienate anyone who isn't a martial artist or interested in other weapons.

Ok, I'll go first:

How many of us are also excited by rotating their pen around the thumb,

I don't know if I'd use the term "excited", but I do this annoying behavior. It's a nervious thing. I'm a very nervious person. Twirling a pen or a balisong is just an outlet for some of that energy.

handling a nunchaku at high speed

Never have.

learning fancy ways to draw a sword

Depends on what you mean by "fancy"?

drawing a gravity knife in one fast wrist move,

Gravity knives, no, but conventional folders, yes, Aside from the combative applications of this, "flicking" my folder is just a nervous outlet for me.

manipulating kama like Jimmy Pham,

Sorry to show my ignorance, but I have no idea what a kama is or who Jimmy Pham is.

throwing their Glock :-) behind the shoulder and retrieve it in the other hand

My only Glock was a gift from a girl friend and I don't want to dammage it. Some people keep a flower pressed in a book; I've got a Glock. Besides, I'd be scared of a Glock accidentally discharging. But, A P7, well, that I certainly do practice handling, drawing, and firing frequently.

OK OK OK... I'm strange.
I knew that :-)))

FYI
"fancy" (ways to draw a sword) meant non-traditionnal, not necessarily efficient. For instance, Sho Kosugi always do a rotation with his sword before putting it into his sheath. It's a move for cinema. Done quickly you don't really see how he does this and it's impressive. It's just a rotation of the handle of the sword between the index and the middle finger. It allows the sword to do almost a 360° turn.

Gravity knives : I meant folder knives (with enough inerty to be opened like this).

Kama = Japanese sickle (usually used by pair when considered as a Martial Arts weapon).
Jimmy Pham does MA "creative" forms with kama and won many tourmanents. The "link" I do with the bali is that the new use of this weapon in competition tends to add a lot of fingers moves, rotation of the kama around the hand/fingers. It's not what you learn in traditionnal "Kobudo" clubs (Kobudo is the original Okinawan art which teaches Kama).

Glock... I've just seen the move on the TV :-) you know in France... no gun!

Anyway, you're right, this forum is not the place to deal with all those things. There are too many examples and too many discussions which could result.
For those who are interested, I'll try to add stuff and videos in the "Beyond the balisong" section of balisong.net.

I think that there are a lot of things we could talk about that would not be toooo off topic.
I like throwing knives, swords, guns and other weapons also.

I like throwing knives, they're quiet.

Never did it before, now I do it, when I can't use a bali.

>handling a nunchaku at high speed

Yes please, but what is high speed ?
I saw the "Round Speed Nunchaku" at www.gungfu.com, it says "These speed chucks will spin up to 2500 revolutions per minute! " that's 42 spins per second... sounds like complete BS !!?
Normally I spin my cocobolo heavyweight's at 4-5 spins per second.

I want to learn Iaido. Maybe when I get old and have more time. BTW, My kendo/iaido teacher Mike Henry (I studied with him for 6 months a couple of years ago), recently became the first swedish 6 dan in Iaido !
Iaido is BEAUTIFUL! Absolutely controlled movements! The grace! Aaahhhh....

The sword "rotation" is called Chiburi and is intended to clear blood from the blade. This particular style of chiburi is part of the Jigend Ryu, and while it may appear to be "flashy" it actually is part of a formalized fighting style. Just a note.

'Some people keep a flower pressed in a book; I've got a Glock.'

i really LIKE that! can i use that quote? even though i own a Sig
