Ok, you guys with the fancy, high priced watches might want to skip over this thread...

I love watches, but I am not at the stage to be able to afford a REALLY nice watch (because all of my money goes to knives). In fact, the only two decent watches I own are a Seiko diver and a Luminox.

I was at Best Buy the other day and found some screen protectors for digital cameras. They come in a kit with index card size sheets and are made to cut to size. In the kit were a cleaning solution and a squeege.

I traced and cut out a circle the same size as the face on my Luminox. I cleaned the crystal and installed the protector. I then used the squeege to remove the bubbles.

The screen protector looks great, you can't even see that it is there unless you REALLY look for it. I tested it for a couple of days in the shower, and it does not seem to be effected by water.

Now I don't have to worry as much about scratching the crystal when I am wearing the watch at work.

Not knocking it if it works for you. Me personally, it's like having plastic covers for the couch and runners for the carpet. It's like keeping your classic car in the garage, and it's like keeping your knife in a safe. Basically, you can enjoy life and allow what happens, happen, or you can live a cautious life. I don't like safe queens. I use my knives, I wear my watches, and I drive my cars.... and if something happens, I am sure it happened while I was enjoying life rather than living it cautiously.

Just my 2 cents.

I see what you are saying, but I do "wear" my watches. In my line of work (LEO), things can get a little messed up rather quickly. My last G-Shock suffered quite a bit of abuse from a few scuffles. The idea of the protector is just to make it stay nice a little longer. I guess I could always remove it if I had company coming over. LOL

Come to think of it, I do keep my classic car in the garage also. I figure I can take care of it and have it last a lifetime, or I can drive it every day and restore it about every five years. Usually I take it out on weekends and enjoy it. It is way too expensive to find parts to be a true "daily driver".:)

I hear what you're saying..... Having been a professional Search and Recovery Diver amongst other things, I can tell you all about how fast things can get mucked up. But for me, life is too short. I guess I am a risk taker. Never been one to put on a raincoat or a sleeve or use any other protection on my watches. :D

The abuse that they'll take is one of the reason why I like, and wear, Casio G-Shocks...I DO have a "beater" G-Shock that I can wear if I KNOW I'm heading into something really rough.

I've done the same thing using PDA screen protectors on the LCD screens of my cellphone. The plastic cover seem to get scratched up pretty quickly from dust debris and all the crap in my pockets. Never thought about using it on watch crytals. Gotta try that on my 'Nox.

BobHWD, I understand your point and taken my share of risks. I'm the youngest son of an immigrant family raised in urban blight. There was NEVER enough money. What little luxuries we had, we took care of and did what we could to protect them from damage and unneccesary wear. I am still very much that little boy and those little luxuries are still in great condition, reminders of my roots.

I'm not a fan of safe queens either and LIFE is short but I'm sure as a diver you didn't just throw on your gear and dive in. I'm sure you didn't use a knife til it was dull and never sharpened it. I'm sure you didn't leave the grime and gunk splashed on your watch. And I'm sure you didn't drive your car and never changed the oil. Cutting out a piece of plastic to cover a watch crystal or cellphone or even a couch is far from living a cautious mundane life. "High speed, low drag" people ,such as LEOs and SAR divers, are the most meticulous people and often go to great lengths to preserve and protect thier work and personal gear. It would be different if sharpstick was doing this to a Rolex Rolesium Yachtmaster or told us he was putting his 'Nox and Seiko in a safe. You had your 2 cents, here's mine.
