It looks like a cool gadget, but it's useless if it doesn't work right. I got burned already trying the Timex werks whatever they called it.

Should I look at something else? The budget is a little flexible, not too much though. thanks for any input.

It combines my love of titanium with my love of too much information!

I wouldn't rate casio watches the same as timex. IMHO they are better watches. I have had Casio G shocks and been very satisfied. I also have a Pathfinder (earlier model). It worked ok till the battery gave out. I haven't gotten around to changing the battery yet. (PITA to ship it off and get it water tested etc. - and why I prefer automatics) The Pathfinder does have high gadget appeal. I use the Casios when I do outdoor activities such as shooting, diving etc. and they have been reliable.

P.S. check out the Seiko black monster for a really durable dive watch.

Cool, Casio has some solar powered pathfinders, so I'll look at those two, thanks! the Timex was a huge disappointment.

Casio>>Timex in my opinion. I killed two timexs via sand in the buttons and had a strap break in one month on another..but they were all bought cheap through campmor.

I went back to casio, chose a model with metal buttons because plastic & rubber buttons are just less durable.

Cheap and IMO a better watch and value than timex & freestyle, the two other brands I've used.

I had one of the early Casios with the compass and altimeter and thermometer. It was huge and ugly, but it did work pretty well. The readings, compass, temperature, and altitude seemed accurate enough. To measure room temperature, you have to take it off your wrist and let it set on the table for a half hour or so.

The battery went out on schedule after about one year. I took it to a fancy watch place and they replaced the battery but it wouldn't work. He had a sheet of instructions from Casio about how you were supposed to stand on your head, drink water, and sing the national anthem while pressing some little button hidden inside the watch to start if after replacing the battery, but it wouldn't work. I took it to another place and they said they'd tried to replace the batteries in those before and couldn't get them to restart. I've never gotten around to sending it in for service since it's big and ugly.

The watch I use most of the time is a 20-year old Casio that's still going. It gets a new battery every few years and it's got a new band since the clasp on the old one finally gave out. The light burned out, but the last place that replaced the battery said, "We can replace that for you to for an extra $20," so I had 'em do it and now that works again. It's a perfectly fine watch for me.

Get yourself a Casio Tough Solar Protrek Triple-Sensor PRG-50-1VDR. I have one, and it's an awesome watch!

Thanks, I think I will. Although, I've recently noticed a brand called Suunto.

Check out the Suunto X9. It is the latest and has full GPS, compas, barometer etc etc etc etc and and yes...it tells the time too LOL.

I have a Casio G-Shock Wademan with built in compass, thermometer etc and it is very rugged and I use it when going outdoors. I really love Casio G-Shocks.

Here's the link to the one I got 1 1/2 years ago:

I haven't checked the compass with another compass, but I do know the general direction is correct. The tide table is also correct. I have had no problems with mine.

BTW: Watchworld ships SUPERFAST!!! Ordered my watch on Friday, it was in my mailbox on Monday!!!!

The Casios are excellent watches. They don't look "professional", but I've never heard anyone complain about how well they do their jobs.

Personally, I wear a Suunto X-Lander. Some of their newer models look pretty cool, but they stopped putting countdown timers on them. I use that feature a lot and I'm not willing to buy a watch without one.

On the other hand, the lack of countdown timers has been one of my major gripes about Casio's models for the last decade. It is very good news, at least to me, that they have started including them again!

that's true, a countdown timer would be good.

I have one of those and am very pleased with it. It is VERY light and comfortable. The analog hands are nice, but a little hard to read in some lighting. The compass and barometer are spot on, the altimeter a little flaky and the thermometer useless (always 85-85 degrees) when I am wearing the watch. It works fine though if you give it 20-30 minutes to reach room temp.

The case is pretty soft metal though (I think that it is aluminum) and it dings pretty easy. Nothing horrible, but I have put 5 or 6 minor nicks and dings in it wearing it around the computer room at work.
