I found a Wittnauer at work months ago. I held on to it thinking that whoever lost it would come looking for it. The name on the back wasn't in our database so it sat in my desk waiting to be claimed. It's now been so long that I know it's not going to be claimed. We're talking close to year. So...I've done a little searching online to find some info on it. It's the "Black Tie" model, all black trimmed in gold with the only thing on the face being a little diamond at 12 o'clock. I found a pic of it but no price. It could use a new band but other than that it's in great shape. So, what am I sitting on, here. I'm not sure it really suits me. I'm not that elegant. Should I sell it, trade it, keep it, give it to a friend or family member for a birthday? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Ohh, seems like you're in a bit of a moral dilemmma.

I say sell it. If the owner wanted it, he/she would have looked harder. A year is a long time to hold onto something for someone, I say it's yours.

Some people say you're not supposed to give watches/knives as gifts. Superstition.

Good Evening All-

SilverFoxKnows, hmmmm....I don't think I would give a watch that I found on the ground as a gift. If it were used but had a personal history with you, that would make a difference. You might be giving away the watch that the FedEx driver lost, or worse yet, received from his/her deceased spouse.

Keep the timepiece for your own use. If someone "calls you on it" in the office, gladly doff it and return it to the original owner. Tell them you earnestly tried to find the owner with the hopes that they could be reunited with their property a long time ago.

Good luck,

Interesting dilemma.

I think you're probably right that after several months the watch will most likely never be claimed.

Since you don't like the look of the Wittnauer (not my taste either), sell it and buy yourself a watch more suitable to you. Or get a nice knife :D

Mate, Blue Jays is correct. It's wrong to profit
from anothers loss. IF ,in time, you are unable to
find the owner then gift the watch to someone that
needs a watch and cant' afford a good one.

I have found two watches in my lifetime, once when in college, i posted a sign on a bulletin board near where I found it without description of the watch, that night someone showed up and described it perfectly so I gave it to him. The second time it was near the swimming pool at the Disneyland Hotel, I hung around for a while to see if someone would come by but nothing happened, so I took it to the front desk, they put it in an envelope in the lost-and-found drawer, I don´t know what was of it.

I say keep it, even use it if you wish, but take care of it and don´t give it away, you don´t know if you´ll ever find the owner, even if you don´t, you´ll know you´ve done right.
