Watch VS Knife for big 40?

I know this will be controversial, but I have to ask. I'm about to hit the big 40 and my wife wants to get me something nice. I have several nice knives (Small Sebenza, William Henry Carbon Lancet, etc..) but my best watch is a Citizen (which she gave me for an aniversary several years ago) that looks nice but has been in for repair several times. I won't buy another Citizen.

I should also mention that I'm in sales and am often in the company of executives who are into watches. Like knives I find the mechanisms of fine watches to be fascinating from an engineering and manufacturing standpoint. Watchmakers seem to work near the extreme edge of precision metalworking. The variety also makes them cool.

If the budget was around $1000.00 for a landmark birthday present, would you want a watch or a knife? Pretend, like me, you have junk watches and great knives already.

I know that I could get a couple nice customs for this much money (or one really nice one) and for a watch this is entry level for nice watches, so I'm looking for opinions.

Tell me what you think.

jmx,

If you have a small Sebenza you really don't need any other knives.

Did I say that?

Seriously get a good watch.

I would recommend a Omega GMT.

This will be my next $1000 purchase. :)

They don't call this Blade Forums for nothin'. Knife, of course.:p

That said, my present to myself for my next promotion (40 being nought but a memory) will probably be the Rado Ceramica.

$1000 would be the low end of the scale for a quality mechanical movement watch, purchased new.
My advice would be to look for a vintage, pre-owned Omega. For $1000, you can buy a real beaut. Probably even get a gold cased watch. Check out Gisbert A. Joseph for the absolute best selection in vintage pieces.
His prices are a little higher than other vintage dealers, but all his pieces are fully restored, and virtually perfect.
Good luck, and let us know what you choose.

Well I am just a redneck and spend all my time in a barn, so I don't know alot about all that fancy stuff. But I can't begin to imagine wearing or owning a $1000 watch, or really even a $1000 knife for that matter. I can look at them and say wow, thats slicker than deer guts on a steep slope... but I can't see myself shelling out the cash ;)

My suggestion would be to go for a nice set. I'm not real sure on the prices but maybe something along the lines of a DDR Apogee,EDC, or mayb one of Tom's TNT's and a nice watch.

Spend another grand and get a Panerai and have the biggest and baddest watch in your company!

As someone else mentioned, try a vintage watch, and you'll get far more for that $1000. What would be really cool is to find one that was manufactured during the year of your birth

Simi Valley, rubbing elbows with execs? If you have nice threads, get the watch.

Surely you will wear that much more than a $1000 knive. Not that how frequently you would use the item is the bottom line... It just sounds like you would get more out of a much nicer watch than another great knife...

I'm a newbie, did I just sin by saying this?

I think you should go get yourself a nice TAG and a TNT. Can't beat that combo. The executives would definately appreciate a TAG. That's about $500.00 each.

My wife got me an Omega SMP for my birthday last year :D . Now all of my Seiko's and TAG's just sit in my safe. I would go with a nice automatic watch because it needs no battery, puts a smile every time I look at it, and is politcally correct (sheeple acceptable, metal detecters, etc). Now try to admire your knife at work, in an airplane or in a courthouse. You can't, but with a watch you can admire it anywhere, even underwater.

...and get the real mother, the Speedmaster Professional. That's what I did... Wearing mine right now. Check out the Omega Forum at www.timezone.com. I used to hang out there a lot :)

Chuck Maddox and Robert-Jan Broer are -among the- experts there and have their own Omega-related sites too. Dunno the URL's from the top of my head but just ask'em. Going the eBay-way is tricky unless you know what to look for... Lots of fakes and "Frankenwatches" -made out of Speedy-parts from all over the place.

The Speedy Pro is a real must-have though. You won't regret it.
$1000 will get you a pre-owned one without problem; $1200 should get you a real decent one.

Since you posted the question here instead of www.timezone.com -- whether you know it yet or not your subconscious has already made up your mind. Maybe next birthday you'll want a watch, but you want a knife this time! That still small voice that made you post the question knows what it wants; it's only here for ammunition.

So, let us help you out -- what kind of knife do you want? We'll post pictures even your stoopid ol' conscious mind can't resist.

If you add another $100 you can get a Sinn EZM1 selling over at Timezone.com right now. I don´t think it will last for long. Very cool watch and for $1100 I believe you get it for a lot less than it´s worth.
