I am in the market for a new wrist watch and was thinking about purchasing one with a built-in compass (either mechanical or digital) and was wondering if anyone had any experinces with them - good or bad - that they would be willing to share.

I have a Silva compass that I use for orientering with a map, but would like something that would always be available since I wear a watch 99% of the time.

Thanks in advance.

This is my EDC watch. Timex Expedition Ecompass. $100 at Bass Pro Shops (in the store)

I'm very pleased with my Suunto X-Lander.

It's tough, easy to read, keeps excellent time, and offers far more navigation features than I have ever needed. :)

Suunto explorer is great if you are in the market for a slightly dressier watch. mine is one of the Ti ones, and apart from the 1/yr requirement to change the battery, it is a fantastic watch. Only downside to it is the alarm is a bit quiet. Good luck!!!

My cell phone has clock, compass, camera and a few other gizmos I don't know anything about yet. :D

Actually even the two axis fluxgate works quite well.

Or, if you want an unbeatable coolness factor without wearing something that looks like a PC strapped to your wrist, there is always this one. I love mine, but it's definitely pricey.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the posts, I really like the Tissot, but I think that my budget will push me towards the Timex.

Thanks again.

I use the Suunto Observer. it is not my main compass outdoors, but being on my wrist it is very convient for quick checks and acts as a backup compass as well. It is surprizingly accurate and always consistent with my "real" compass.

I also find it useful in the city (where I don't carry a "real" compass) when I get disoriented and want to know which I am going.

It has a declination adjustment, reads with 1 degree precision, but useually only realiable to within 3-5 degrees.

Could you answer a feature question for me? Does your TISSOT have any kind of count-down alarm on it? (The kind of alarm you can set to go off in 20 minutes intead of at a specific time.)

I use a wrist compass that I buy at camping stores for about $10. I throw the strap away and just slide the small compass on the strap of whatever watch I happen to be wearing. The compass isn't the greatest and I wouldn't want to navigate my way through dense bush with it. But it works great for general navigation. I use it often (many times a week).

This may not be the sexiest option, but it works well for me.

Good luck,

Nope, that's one thing it doesn't have. It does have a nice kitchen sink included, however. :) I just get a kick out of watching people's faces when you use the compass, and the minute and hour hands spin around like a compass needle. Great fun.
