Water based (Ecoweld) vs. Solvent based contact cements

The reason I ask is that during the summer my ventilation is not as good as during the cooler months and I was thinking at trying water based products sold by Tandy in the hopes of salvaging the few remaining brain cells I have. ;)

Any of you guys have experience with them and how they compare to solvent based products?

Thanks

I have used the EcoWeld a bit and it's not bad. Doesn't have the holding strength of good old barge, but not too bad at all. I have had better luck with Neoweld that I got from ST Leather. But I cant seem to get them to answer the phone much anymore. With the Neoweld I don't have to wait at all for it to dry. Just press together and sew. And on a big multi sheath project that helps out.

I've been using the water based, low voc contact cement sold by Weld for the last 6months and have found it to be satisfactory. Takes just a little longer to dry before putting together, but the lack of fumes more than makes up for that. It's sold at Lowe's, Home Depot and other hardware outlets. Look for the green label. I buy in the quart size and just thin with water if it gets a little thick.

That's great to hear Rick, I'll take a look at Home Depot here and if they don't carry it I'll pick up some south of the border.

Michael, too bad about Neoweld, sounds interesting.

Thanks guys.

Well, boys, I guess you never get too old to learn something. I have used barge exclusively for over 50 years and never gave the "Eco" stuff a serious thought, primarily because I'm a great believer in if ain't broke, don't fix it...................But if the water based stuff really does stick as well as Barge then I'm down for giving it a try. I particularly like the thin with water part, but that's also the part that makes me suspicious of the holding power.

Mike and Rick, let me hear a bit more in detail......please convince me. And then direct me to a source.

If I can get to Tandy this week I'll pick up some Ecoweld and do a side by side comparison this week-end with the a solvent based cement.
Hopefully results and pics next week.

Paul, Hidecrafter lists it on the web. And also ST if you can reach them. I have had good luck with it and also good old Barge. Just google Neoweld

I'll never use anything but Weldwood, I just can't imagine anything better.....and I can't even smell it anymore...does that mean it's too late for me??

Well you probably can't work as a perfume designer or wine taster anymore. ;)
Might have something to do with the number of braincell you start with. I did not start with that many to begin with so I am not taking any chance. ;)

Kidding aside, I am going to Tandy today and picking up what I can as far as water based cements for my test. I'll keep you guys posted.
