I like these aluminium water bottles such as are made by Sigg of Switzerland. But the ones I have come across are all round and I keep trying to find a military style rectangular shaped one. The military ones themselves tend to be plastic which I don't like - I like the aluminium ones with the laquered insides.

Anybody got any ideas where I can find one?

Thanks.

I thought I seen a stainless steel military water bottle before, but the life of me I can not seem to recall where I saw that at. It was a while ago I saw it, maybe it doesn't exist anymore?

Good Luck, I hope you can locate one!

Thanks for your post - I was watching this thread slide into the abyss with no replies....

I was kind of sure I saw one by Sigg but they denied all knowledge of it when I wrote to them - or maybe my German isn't what it was.

I've only ever seen the cylinder style SIGGs

I still use a 1 Litre SIGG for backup to my Hydration System. I keep mine in a SIGG pouch for protection and to keep it cold. Even with pretty horrific dents, SIGGs don't leak.
3 Litres in the Torrent and 1 Litre in the SIGG mean I carry water, but even in cold weather, I use it. Switching to HydraStorm from SIGG as primary supply was so I could drink on the go. Carrying a SIGG as well means I can keep hot soup in it if required.

SIGGs are great.

I have a round Sigg and like you say they're great - I was just after something similiar which was more comfortable to carry on its own - like on the belt. Something like the military shape but built like a Sigg.

These aluminum bottles -- do they quickly conduct the head from the outside into your cold water?

What are the advantages of aluminum bottles over nalgene? I've always assumed the aluminum -- especially if they're coated with something on the inside -- would be much more prone to damage than nalgene.

thanks!

Joe,

The Sigg bottles do heat up pretty quick on a hot day but you can get an insulating cover to keep the contents cool - or hot.

I've taken my Sigg all over, cycling, walking and it has taken a lot of abuse over the years with no adverse effects - plus it doesn't leak.

I have to admit I've never tried a Nalgene one - how do you rate them?

Thanks

David

Nalgene bottles come in 2 grades. There is a white plastic which can make things taste plasticy and they can stain. Oh, if you put, say, curry in your white bottle and then wash it and put in water, it will taste kinda curry-ish! So, great for water or any other liquid, as long as you stick with that liquid.

Nalgene also comes in a tough lexan, which now comes in a few colors. Tough bottles which don't give off plastic taste or absorb tastes. Theya re a bit more $, but worth every penny.

The bottles come in a few sizes and with a couple variations in top sizes. For me it is best to get the wide mouth ones, as I can get replacement tops for wide mouth ones much more easily and cheaper than for the narrop top ones.

I have had Mr. Nalgene (yes, I named my bottle) since March and I love it. Oh, the bottle has measurements on it, which i have really coem to enjoy. Monitoring my water intake is fun to do now, and a great thing to do for my health. Mr. Nalgene is great.

Does anyone have a link to a Sigg dealer in the USA? I see most of the people talking about them are from Europe and that's all the dealers I find when I do a web search. Are they available in America?
Thanks.

I have about 7 of the Lexan Nalgene bottles and they do indeed rock. No flavour lingers in them and they are tough as nails. I watched some guys out back at Galyans in Indy hit a full one with a baseball bat. It came out unscathed.

I prefer the widemouth ones for putting ice in them. I also sometimes put fruit coctail in them, or pineapple, peaches, etc. for hiking so I don't have to carry cans.

Sierra Trading Post has some Sigg bottles.

I know the R.E.I. carries the Sigg Fuel bottles at rei.com I am willing to bet that any large backpacking store would have them,

I just ordered a nalgene bottle from the www.rei.com site. Looking forward to trying it out.

rei - they were seriously helpful when it came to shipping across the atlantic and didn't charge much for the postage.

Thanks for the recommendations
