On the two scabbards I have, the leather seems to be thicker than the other. The thicker one also seems to have a stronger smell. Whereas the the scabbard with the thinner leather has little or no smell at all.

What's the difference? Is one made from the "armpit"? Will a liberal application of right guard alleviate this problem?

Bruiser -
I've contended that the leather is green (semi cured) so it will shrink onto the wood. Can't compare sense of smell on the web, but I have had a couple of sheaths, which had sat in a collection for a number of years, and had "regained" their original scent along with a definite suspicion of decay. In both cases, a couple of light applications of Lysol spray cured the odors, and a few coats of Lexol brought the leather back up to par. Leather with a "cow" odor contains bacteria - the Lysol should get them. American tanned leathers have their own distinct odor, but I'm assuming what you are referring tois a little more "barnyard.

Bruiser I can't add anything to Walosi's most excellent advice as to how to alleviate the problem.:)
That should take care of it perfectly.

The difference is that the thicker hide isn't quite as well cured as the thinner leather.
And like I said in the title, "The thicker leather comes from over the neck area."
Except for the odor and bacteria problem this is the most desirable piece of hide on the animal as it will wear and last the longest and always is the strongest leather.
Us ndns made our shields from the shrunken area of a buffalo's hump and some were nearly 1/2" thick. They could literally stop some of the old black powder powered bullets or at least cause them to ricochet off!!!!!!!!

The thin leather is what actually comes from the "armpits.":D

That probably is the thing. Water buffalo leather smells a little different than the stuff from North America. I remember a zillion years ago my brother had a baseball mitt that smelled the same :barf: I wonder where it was made now.

You can't get any better collective knowledge anywhere else on the WWW than you can here!!!!;)

Just remember Bruise that you're amongst a bunch of really old pharts who've been there and done that. Some of us more than once.:)

They know all, see all, and tell most of it.

I can't find the good barf Yvsa dug up for me or I'd post it for the nasty smelling leather.

Ever been to a Nepali butcher shop?

I'm sure one can learn a lot by sitting by a campfire and listening to you guys phart. :D

Maybe someday my flatulence will be as wise. ;)

Check the Anthrax thread.

Audrey would like to express her regards to the parties sending that letter. No hurry - she's willing to take her ( exquisitely leisurely ) time at it.
