A friend of mine wants to sell me a custom 110 with Waterbuffalo handles. I've never seen this handle material and the pictures he's sent me are a bit fuzzy. Does anyone have a decent picture of this handlematerial.

Here are a few Bucks with Buff handles

Hmm, that chipped flint 112 looks familiar.

LOL....yep the set of 112's was broken up. You see a freind and fellow Buck Brother had none and there was an extra....well the rest is history. So are the chippy blades growing on you Dave?

Don't be surprised if there are swirls or streaks of white in the scales...Water Buffalo is known for these (I don't know what they're called)...Mine has a few small ones; I think I can see one or two in lambertiana's pic...Buck offers the Water Buffalo in both "jigged" and flat polished form; obviously I like the flat polished scales...but they're both quite striking... :)

Chickentrax,"both are quite striking".I certainly whole hearted agree. Thanks guys for posting.DM

The friend decided not to sell the knife but I'm going to go ahead and order one from Buck. Right now I'm stuck between Water Buffalo, Ram Horn, and Indigo Royal Wood I just can't quite make a decision.

That is one nice handle material, I was initially leaning that way and am leaning that way very heavily again. But I'll still have time to change my mind ten more times before I go to order it.

GW,

That is the fun part....trying to decide just what to get;).

The water buffalo is quite different from the African one shown in the above photo. They are widely spread through Asia, though mostly as domesticated animals. Small wild populations do exist. They are also found in North Africa and Italy - the milk is used to produce Mozzarella cheese.

Feral populations exist in PNG and Northern Australia. In Australia they were hunted for hides and later pet meat. A government program to exterminate them in the wild a few years ago reduced the number dramatically but they seem to be making a comeback. They are a popular target for safari and recreational hunters.

The horn material works well for knife grips. It is hard and durable. The horn can be left relatively rough or polished to a beautiful finish. It can also be jigged for effect and to give a more secure grip.

I don't have a Buck with buffalo horn and don't know where they source their grip material. The most likely option is India - a country with a huge population of domesticated buffalo.

The pic below is a custom Yataghan from a local knifemaker. The horn was taken from a feral buff in Australia's Northern Territory.
