I have some iodine in my survival pack, but they have a fairly short shelf life and they don't really filter the water, just kills the bad stuff and leaves a nasty taste.I've been contiplating a "Survival Straw" do to it's indefinate shelf life and compact size, and price. It also boasts some amazing claims approved by the FDA etc. However,my b.s. meter was pinging and after some threads research I'm not feeling really confident in that "filter" device. So basically is there anything out there that is under $100.00,filters out most of the bad stuff,is high in quality, durable, compact, easy field maintainable, and can filter a large amount of water before needing a new filter?Prefer a filter that can be cleaned in the field, instead of having to carry around spare fragile ceramice filters.I know this is a tall order, but maybe someone knows something I don't about what is available.thanks

has anyone tried the MSR electronic germ killer that you dip in the glass?

it looks pretty handy but does it work?

it is a bit pricey but not outrageous.

I got rid of filters and use iodine crystals all ron hood.

Actually you don't dip it in the glass at all.
Using water and salt it manufactures a solution of mixed oxidants that will kill most, if not all harmful things in water. You put a small amount of water in the MIOX unit to produce the solution and then mix the MIOX solution with four liters of water and wait the prescribed amount of time until it's safe.
From the MSR website:
"About MIOX®
Developed in conjunction with the U.S. military, the MIOX® Purifier offers unrivaled ease of use and reliability for purifying large volumes of water, making it ideal for outdoor recreation, travel, and disaster-preparedness. It works by creating a powerful dose of mixed oxidants (MIOX), which is then added to untreated water, inactivating all viruses, bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium (which even iodine doesn’t kill). And since the MIOX Purifier needs only common camera batteries and salt to operate, it’s maintenance-free, delivering more water, more easily than any purifier ever before"

I just got a mini works ex for christmas, haven't used it yet though. Should I use some other treatment with it too, like iodine? Also is iodine bad for you if you use it a lot to purifier water? That Miox sounds good.

But since this is a going in a survival kit would you want to have to have deal with even more batteries to operate the MSR Miox?
