I drank straight out of the lakes in the BWCA for years with no problems;however, my good sense finally got through my thick skull that there was no reason to spoil a great trip with "Beaver Fever"(Girardia). I can't say enough good about the Platypus 4 liter filtration system.
Asolutely flawless on a 5 day trip. The only thing I would add is a cap for the clean water side when not running water through the system, but it really isn't that big of a deal.
Someone already did an excellant review on youtube of it's use.

It's light at 10oz
Back flushable
Rolls up small
Huge volume(imo)
Fast!!! 4 liters in about 2minutes
No pumping!!

Good to know, thanks for the review! Beautiful country, are you on vacation, or do you live there?

Youtube review isn't mine. I live in Minnesota. Trip pics in sticky thread. "Bwca"

I've had good luck with the MSR stuff. You can carry two identical Dromedary bags, since they take up almost no space when empty, and filter one into the other. One of their filters actually attaches to their water bladders, weighs just over 200 grams (7.5oz) and can filter up to 3 liters per minute. And it has the added bonus of being field-cleanable with no tools, so it can literally filter up to 2000 liters, even out in the middle of nowhere.

I know quite a few people who swear by MSR (their water bladders are also legendary for outlasting basically all other companies. I know a guy who has had one for like 10 years, still going strong. And they have lifetime warranties if you do manage to break one.)

Any sawyer squeeze fans?
I got one, but have not had to use it, yet, since I've been dayhiking and carrying all my water.
Only tried it with tap water so far, but it will get used a lot this fall.
Got an extra Platypus to use with it, since people complain about the durability of the factory bags, and a "water tornado" thing that attaches the outlet directly to the Platy the filtered water is going into, and lets you backflush the filter without having to use that big syringe that comes with it.
3oz!!!:D

For the last 15+ years I've used a PUR Voyageur purifier, except it's had Hiker filters in it since they discontinued the Voyageur. The current model is the Katadyn Hiker.

Any sawyer squeeze fans?

I've been using the Sawyer gravity filters for the past couple of years and love them. The squeeze filter is excellent as well; not sure how long the bags hold up, but I've been packing an extra one just in case...

I am giving serious consideration to a Sawyer filter (either the squeeze or the gravity version).
The Platypus GravityWorks filter got me interested, but according to MSR/Platypus, you need to REPLACE the filter after 1500 liters. Compared to Sawyer's 1 million liter guarantee, I have to go with Sawyer.
