Just to relate an interesting experience I had this weekend...
A while back I spent the night on a rocky ridge in some really dry country here in central Brazil. There was a very large black rock up there with small holes in it. Just for lack of a better thing to do I stuck a weed down one of the holes and it came back wet! This was at the end of the dry season so it really surprised me.
This weekend I was back on the same ridge but this time I have a 60 ml syringe and a length of plastic tube. I was able to extract about a half liter of water from the rock by threading the tube down various holes and fissures. The water had a fair amount of debris and needed to be filtered and treated but I was fairly impressed with the fact that I was able to get so much water out of several small 1 cm diameter holes.
Scoutiggn the area I found lots of such holes in other rocks but didn't take the time to test all of them. The syringe is going to stay in my pack from now on. Mac
