Water from the rock

Just to relate an interesting experience I had this weekend...

A while back I spent the night on a rocky ridge in some really dry country here in central Brazil. There was a very large black rock up there with small holes in it. Just for lack of a better thing to do I stuck a weed down one of the holes and it came back wet! This was at the end of the dry season so it really surprised me.

This weekend I was back on the same ridge but this time I have a 60 ml syringe and a length of plastic tube. I was able to extract about a half liter of water from the rock by threading the tube down various holes and fissures. The water had a fair amount of debris and needed to be filtered and treated but I was fairly impressed with the fact that I was able to get so much water out of several small 1 cm diameter holes.

Scoutiggn the area I found lots of such holes in other rocks but didn't take the time to test all of them. The syringe is going to stay in my pack from now on. Mac

Mac, Just out of curiosity..What the hell are you doing in Brazil? Are you a Gringo? You come up with some interesting posts. My wife is from Costa Rica so I've been there a bit.

Good observation, Pict. Four feet of plastic aquarium "air hose" not only lets you get a water in cracks and crevaces, it's also a useful part of a solar still set-up.

Nice thread, reminds me of that parable in the bible where someone (Jesus?) struck a rock with his staff and water came out. Or was it Satan trying to tempt Jesus?

I believe it was Moses who struck the rock with the Rod of Aaron(sp)while leading the people of Israel in the wilderness...

Neat post, btw...:)

Eager,

I'm a wandering holy man, a missionary, Baptist Pastor, it's my job... it's what I do. I am an urban church planter, youth pastor, biblical counselor, and all around do-gooder. When people start to drive me crazy I do like Jesus did and head off into the wilderness for afew days.

Yes, it was Moses that struck the rock out of disobedience. He was supposed to speak to the rock but he let his temper get ahold of him and made a show of it. Now if he had a syringe and a length of tube along,maybe... Nah, ruins the plot. (Numbers 20:8)

I was suprised to get as much water as I did. You can't imagine how dry this places is. It's like a bake oven during the day. Mac

Atrick-Pay, You're right..I was going from memory.:)

It probably wouldn't hurt me if I cracked open The Book more often.
