Anyone know of any places in the U.S. that will do water jet cutting of knife patterns? I know all about laser cutting (and the small amount of edge hardening that goes along with it), and would like to check out the water jet cutting possibilty.

I would also like the place to carry the steel (154CM,440C,tool steels, etc.) too, as this would save on the shipping and related costs.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!http://www.nebsnow.com/L6steel

Well, where i work, we have a water jet machine that cuts with sand and water. This what you guys are talking about?? We don't carry steel, though. I am trying to talk the big boss into doing this, but it would be about the cost of steel, figure about $8 for cutting each blade and shipping. I will try to convinve that there is a maeket for this, as i know he does custom stuff out of glass and granite for people, like countertops, etc. Let me talk to him tomorrow and see if i can talk him into it.

We don't seem to be getting to far here guy's!! Someone has to know of a place

Mr. Jailhack, Yes there is a place here in Spokane Washington. Precision H2O 1 (800) 425-2098 ask for Brandon. I have used them many times. They do a good job at a fair price if you want several of the same shape. The best prices are if you send them the steel in the same size each time. That way they dont have to make a computer file each time. They may sell steel but you can shop around and get a better price I think. Bruce

Thanks for the info so far, I'll check these places out.

Any more out there?

Just to add a little confusion to the topic

Has anyone had blade blanks cut using wire spark erosion technology? A local firm tells me they can cut from annealed or hardened steel in any shape, and showed me all kinds of tools cut mainly from blocks of hardened D2.

That then led me to think about how you harden a block of 12"x12"x8" D" evenly!

Roger

Roger, I have used EDM to cut folder blanks, it is by far the most accurate of the different ways to cut, tolorences can be held to the .0001 of an inch, yes, one ten thousands of an inch. The blades we had done (Talonite Carnivore) were so smooth on the tang area that to polish all that was needed was a few seconds on a buff. It is also the most expensive way to cut blades! Also there is almost no HAZ, as the whole thing sits under dialectric fluid if I am not mistaken.
