Water purification tablets?

Ok with the times forever changing it's time for me to throw out my old tabs and buy new purification tabs. What's new or what's the best out there right now as far as taste and true water purification? For the most part I carry a Katadyn Hiker micro filter but it never hurts to have back up.

Thanks for the input.

Aqua Mira drops. It is two chemicals that are stored inert in separate bottles. When you mix a few drops of each, it activates and is added to the water. Easy, no weird taste, and doesn't deteriorate like tablets.

I carry the same filter except it's an older one with the PUR name. I mark the top of the filter with a sharpie for how many days of use. Usually we have 1 for 3 people, about 12 liters a days. I stopped bringing the tablets, newest thing out there is the light pens that you turn on and drop in your container for some minutes. The UV light kills all the bugs.

PUR Hiker? Ha! That's what I have! I just figured to call it the Katadyn to save confusion, it's served me well for years now, shame they don't offer the purifier cartridge with the iodine resin anymore all I can find are the micro filter cartridges.

Aqua Mira drops sound like they are worth a shot, I've read up on them a bit and they are on the buy list.

Thanks!

I use the Katydyn MP1 tabs as a backup in case the water looks real skank.

Ha! It's funny, I've got each water treatment listed so far. I like the Aqua Mira drops more then tablets, works much faster- plus I think it makes the water taste better. The Katydyn Tabs- like Fal'er said, great backup- compact, simple, but take a while to work. The Pur Hiker- had it for years, great, reliable design, I like that I can connect the hose for a water bladder and pump water in without taking my pack off. I just picked up two of the Steripen LCD units. My local Dick's Sports had them on the clearance table for about $32, so I bought the only two they had. Sawyer's got a system with a mylar bag that looks good, lightweight and simple. With everything except the Pur Hiker I use a bandanna over the water bottle openings, as a pre filter.
One last thought, if you go with tablets, remember that the treatment times can vary based on water temp, I try to put a note in with the tabs if they are not in the original package.
Hope this helps.

Do you guys really trust a light to kill possibly fatal parasites like flukes and hookworms?? I don't know about all that. If I had to consume anything other than some nice glacial run off or something I'd have to boil it and use a tab or some drops. I'm just waaayy too paranoid after watching so much 'Monsters inside me':(:D I'd much rather just try to carry all the water I'd need for the trip.

when i go backpacking i like to travel light so to save weight on the filter i take just a frontier pro to filter out the big stuff and use aquamira hydrocloride tablets... it has worked good so far :D

I didn't realize the Steripens were so inexpensive. I may have to look for one. I am also another Pur Hiker owner, btw.

Foilist, that model lists for about $100. That's why I grabbed the last two they had. Haven't used them yet, though.
