I have a noob question. If i get to a stream with unclean water and fill my canteen, then boil the water in a different vessel, like a canteen cup, then I still have to clean the canteen right? So how do I that so I kill any germ/bacteria that are left behind? I don't think I can just rinse it out with the clean water and I could not boil the water in the canteen if it is made of plastic. Confused.

If you are using boiling for decontaminating the water, you need to dip your boiling vessel, not the canteen. Dipping the canteen is ok if you are using chemical decon, as long as you partially open the lid and slosh clean chem water over the cap, mouth and threads of the canteen. If boiling, once you dip the canteen in unpure water, you should only drink water that has been cleaned from the boiling vessel or a seperate cup, not the canteen.

Just something different, I carry a 1 gallon freezer bag for dipping water. Keeps my water bottles as receptacles for clean water only.

On some of the 3 litre wine box's the spout can be removed from the bladder.

I have been carrying one backpacking for over a decade. You can overfill them to almost 2 gallons for camp water.
Easy to chemical treat large amounts if needed with a handy spout. Fairly puncture resistant as well.

Great use of throw away recycling.

Take great care not to contaminate your drinking vessel's,

I have a friend that went from 6'4 240 pounds to 170lb with a bout of Giardia, from a bruising left winger to looking like he spent time in an internment camp. Did not get diagnosed right away and had to take an entire hockey season off and 2yrs to put all the muscle back on.

I fill a canteen and and my bladder pack when I leave, If i have to purify I will collect with the canteen , boil/purify and then refill the bladder pack.

Bever fever can be avoided fairly easily, keep your cooking gear clean.

Another thing to remember is that those GI issued canteens are very pours so they retain both taste and bacteria very well. I had my whole team switch to nalgene bottles. Another alternative to to simply carry a metal water bottle.

This is what I do. I show water collection and how to clean the threads of your water bottle too.

FYI, I have a day job, so take it for what it is worth.

i use a filter straw(seychelle pure water advanced filter straw is my current model, there are others but not quite as good) doesn't matter what container i dip or what i'm dipping from the straw handles it. i've even been known to drink right from a dirty shallow puddle with my straw, just to prove the point.never had any adverse effects.i love filter straws.the straw filters virus and bacteria down to 99.99% with the advanced filter, which has added iodinated resin in the filter. i don't leave home without the straw, ever.comes in a handy clip on storage tube for under $20 and filters 25 gallons of water. i also have their 2 liter pouch that will filter 100 gallons down to 99.9999%. i use this to gather bulk/cooking water, and squirt it out, filtered, into my pot or stainless bottle,it rolls up,stores almost flat and weighs about 1/2 lb.i carry a 40 oz wide mouth stainless klean kanteen,i can fill my bottle 80 times per straw and never have to pump, wonder if i used the right amount of chemicals, carry extra containers(except my 2L filter bag),boil,etc.,etc.etc. my whole kit(kanteen, straw, bag) weighs about a pound and will produce 125 gallons of 99.99%(minimum) filtered water from ANY source other than salt water, beat that.

That's a great idea. Do you remember any of the brands that have a removable spout?
