Water stone advice

A few years ago I bought an assortment of slip stones to try out when refinishing blades. One was way too coarse, the next one-a 4000 grit worked well, and the 8000 was useless. The set was relatively inexpensive.
The 4000 is reddish brown. It cuts aggressively, and leaves a smooth finish.
Unfortunately, It's just about used up. I ordered a couple of stones from Lee Valley that were supposed to be 4000 grit. They are not agressive and produce little slurry. I need something that matches my old 4000.
These are not used for sharpening. Does anyone know where I can find the 4000 grit stone I'm looking for? I may have to break it or cut it to make it do what I need, so no expensive stone advice, please.
Thanks in advance.

Thank you.
I'm thinking the reddish stone may be a 1000. I wrote the grits on them with a Sharpie, but I think that one has worn away. I'll do some more checking when I get home. I believe the set was a King brand, but I'm not sure.

Aha! Dumb me- the stone I'm looking for is a 1000, and it's right there on Lee valley's site! At leat posting it here made me think, and get it figured out!

Hey Bill, glad you figured it out.

What are you using the 1000 grit for if not sharpening?

I like the 1000x too :)

I use them as a part of blade refinishing. The stone doesn't "slur" pits, and I can stone them out much quicker than sanding alone. I can also shape the stone to the contour of the blade grind.

If you ever need to order more, Japan Woodworker sells them in packs of four for $22-23 plus s/h. Just never order express shipping from that company as it's the only thing they're not good at doing.

bill....if u know someone with one of those water tile saws u could buy a large king stone and cut it into strips yourself...you'd save alot of money and have strones for half your lifetime.....ryan

Since getting my King 220/1000 combo, I'm amazed at how fast the 1000 grit stone can cut. Took my Delica from concrete scraping dull to shaving sharp in about 40 passes.

If you think the King 1000 is fast, then the more expensive brands would be lightspeed!
