Tried the search feature but it decided to skip out on me.

Just came into possession of 10 of those carriers for 2 liter bottles that the stores have (each carrier holds 8 bottles, iirc). I was going to fill up empty bottles and stack them in the garage. Should I add anything to the water to make it drinkable later on? We had a water main break and had to boil for 24 hours just last week. I've had the idea for a while now, but the store at the bottom of the hill moved and left the carriers by the dumpster.

We placed a fairly good filter unit on our kitchen faucet and have filled up several 3 gallon bottles. We picked up a 2 gallon ceramic dispenser for use with the bottles. We use out of the bottles daily and I fill each one as it's emptied and rotate it to the rear of the supply. That way, no chemicals need to be used. If I were going to store the water for a year or more, I would use bleach. Clorox has a site that explains which bleach is to be used and how much to use.

If it's in a dark sealed container it can be stored for a few years without adding anything. If your worried about it then add bleach before you use it. I believe it was one cap full added to a quart and then use that quart to dispense the bleach to your supply. Look it up I may be mistaken.

IIRC, it's not a good idea to re-use plastic 1 liter or 2 liter bottles, in the long run something can leach into the water, but I can't remember what it is. Anyone else?

Big blue water storage tanks from wal-mart are great. They even have a dispencer. lol Most of the people I know store water in soda bottles. They are made for holding pressure so they are plenty strong but not for long term.

1/4 teaspoon of iodized salt per gallon will help it keep and make it better at hydrating and not hurt taste at all.

Some plastic types can react with acids and other things like UV and have been implicated in some health concerns. HDPE is a good choice for container material, I like gallon glass jars myself.
