WOW! Indiana is now going through its worst flood EVER! At first they were comparing it to the great flood of 1913, but now we have surpassed that! Over the course of Friday night, Saturday morning, we got 10 1/2 inches of rain. The creeks & rivers were already under lots of stress due to storms & tornadoes earlier in the week.
Chuck & I were sitting in a Japanese restaurant on Sat. eve and a lady came running in saying her house was flooded and that the water was coming -- NOW!! Holy Crap, Batman, she was right! The evacuation of northern Columbus had began. We immediately left the restaurant, and couldn't go fast enough. The waters had already reached several fast food restaurants, crossed the highway and closed two of the main roads in town. We made our way home, and turned on the news.
Within the next two hours, we heard that the ENTIRE hospital had to be evacuated due to flooding in the basement & first floor. Patients were taken by helicopter to hospitals in surrounding counties. We now know that the hospital will be closed for months to clean up and repair all the damage. There was lots of equipment, a lab, and the hospital pharmacy in the basement. Helicopters were going all night!
Later we decided to go put gas in the truck, just in case. On the main street in town, we drove through about 18" of water. Sure glad the truck made it!
We didn't have to evacuate, but almost wish we did. Most of the city was without power. Ours was out for about 8 hours, and when it is about 90 degrees & 90% humidity, it can get really hot when the central air goes out! Fortunately, power was restored about 4:30 a.m. & I was finally able to rest.
Chuck & I had to go to pharmacy this morning, and just couldn't believe what we saw. The town looks like a war zone. They said there was 4" standing water in the CVS most of the night. The carpets were just saturated and very muddy. I think most of the town was that way today! We have to boil our water until further notice. What fun! There is no longer any ICE or bottled water availabe in the city....
Maybe tomorrow!
A friend of mine said that in water in the neighborhood street was chest high & water in the houses was up to counter tops. OMG!!
The clean up around here is going to be terrible.
Sorry to go ON & ON -- just want you all to know that Chuck & I are A.O.K.
We have food, water, air conditioning...even ice cream. (and Beer & INFI of course!!)
There are still 23 counties in Indiana under state of emergency, and more flooding. Please keep us in your prayers. (For photos & video, you can go to WTHR.com which is the Indianapolis TV station web site)
Thanks everyone!!
