How typical are these scales? I picked this up off the 'bay since I was wanted to check out the waterbuffalo scales, and they have no natural grain or color variation. Honestly they look like plastic. Is this typical of the waterbuffalo scales that Buck is using these days?

I don't know about typical, most natural material will have some variance. I like some streaking in water buffalo horn and asked Leroy to find some with a good amount of it for these 110's scales.

I have a Buck 501 from the custom shop with water buffalo horn and it is simply absolute black handle scale. I guess it kinda does look like black plastic. I never thought of that before.

I like the wispy streaks myself it has depth. Like looking into a stormy crystal ball.

The concept of upgraded scales on 110/122’s is kind of funny to me. It is actually hard to do better than the stock ebony.

I have some pretty ones.

I'm wondering about your knife. The blade is not familiar........or is that just the camera angle?

It is a 212. It is a lot like a knife Buck made in the early days, now only made in limited runs, but they are out there. The one pictured is jigged buffalo horn 212 1of13.

Lots of 212 info in this thread. My favorite Buck fixed blade to actually carry

Of course.........I should have guessed that.

A fine knife that I haven't gotten around to buying.

:)

I had a custom 110 with almost solid black water buffalo, just a few small spots of grey.
