ok so maybemy question is crazy.....is there a watch similar to the gshock......thats what i wear now......when i say similar i mean can stand up to some abuse(washing dishes, showering, etc) that is dressier.....maybe a stainless steel band....nice face....i dont have a ton of money but thought i would ask cause there's alot waaaay more knowledgable about watches here......i guess the only thing i really need is something that can take a few bumps and not crack and survive a swim in a pool and dish duty......ryan

It sounds like you want a stainless steel dive or field watch. I don't consider any digital watch as dressy.

My GSAR has not left my wrist in 8 months since I got it.

Check out Seiko and Orient 100 meter watches. It doesn't sound like you need their (less dressy) 20 meter watches.

Your demands fit most quality steel cased analog watches. In addition to Seiko and Mako check out Citizen and any number of other high value watch brands.

Another vote for the Marathon GSAR. TOUGH. Never leaves my wrist- work or play, it has been through some tough stuff and still looks great.

i love the gear!,,,,to rich for my blood though.....thanks for the recommendations......why is it bad to shower with your watch...no different from a pool or getting it wet?....or am i missing something.....ryan

How much do you want to spend? And some people recomend against showering because of the heat. I take it off when I remember but i do draw the line at hot tubbing with em.

Steam from a shower or hot tub is different than going swimming.Water resistance in a watch is actually more about pressure that water. Also the constant temp fluctuations don't help either.

i would have never thought that about the shower....makes sense though...if i had to set a budget i guess it'd be 3-400 tops.....but i wouldn't be opposed to spending 80 bucks either.....i don't need any fancy things....just the time and date maybe....hell i don't even need the date!.....i like the idea of an automatic watch but don't necessarily need it.....i like the looks of the seiko 5's.....ryan

Some time back I bought a Seiko Kinetic diver's watch. Ran across it in a pawn shop. 200m water resistant. Rotating bezel. Analog with date window (number only, no day of the week) at 3 o'clock. Almost didn't pull the trigger because it has a yellow face. Glad I decided to buy it. I haven't worn any of my other watches since I put it on. It has survived its share of bumps and bangs. I haven't chopped wood while wearing it, and I took it off before I fired up the chainsaw yesterday. The accuracy spec for this watch is +/- 15 seconds a month. The one I have is more accurate than that.
The kinetic movement, in case you're not familiar, is what I guess you would call a hybrid between automatic and electric. In stead of winding a mechanical movement, when the watch moves it causes the internal pendulum to spin a generator which charges a capacitor which powers the movement. Accuracy of a quartz watch and no batteries to replace.
This thing retails for something over $500...haven't checked MSRP in a while...but I got it for a lot less. They can be found new on the internet for much less than $500, but be aware that there are counterfeits out there. The Kinetics can also be found in different styles and with different colored faces.
Oh yeah...I don't shower with mine on either.

Check out a Seiko 5 Sport stainless steel. Look for one with a lug width of 20mm or larger. These are automatic and pretty tough and a good value for their nominal price.

Same here

Where I live it gets 120 degrees plus, a watch should be able to survive anything your body can.

Casio also has a lot of good economical candidates. Search for Casio Dress 100m and you should find some hits. What's your budget?

Honestly, for $400 you can get a good Swiss watch. My first Oris cost about that. Gevril, Ebel, Tissot, Boliva; these are all old, reliable, companies that offer good watches in your price range. One more piece of advice; don't get a chronograph, they're not "dressy".
