So I am thinking about getting some new waterstones form Naniwa and I am wondering what sounds like a better progression of the three?

These ared post 1000 as I have the pre 1000 stones currently

Options 1:
1000
3000
8000
12000

Option 2:
1000
5000
10000
12000

Option 3:
1000
5000
12000

Sparing in mind for now I would like to buy the minimal number of stones to get to 12000 and I can always add more later.

Just looking for some suggestions from people that have used these stones. Thanks!

What are you sharpening and how much experience do you have in using waterstones?

With these grits, you are only polishing the steel.

Well I will be using it mainly for knives, but also a straight razor and some axes. I usually use the WES for my knives because it's easier and faster. I get fantastic results but want to get back into waterstones. I used water stones before that but want to expand the collection so somewhere between a newbie and a master. I know these are in the polishing range but like I stated I have the coarser stones (up to 1000 starting at 220). So i don't need those. I am just looking to expand..learn more and get better at free hand..

Of the ones you have listed I would pick option #1

Have you thought about natural finishing hones?

Yea 1 is a nice progression, I was just wondering if other have "deleted stones" and didn't think it was too far of a jump or if they did

I had not, but do you have a suggestion, I am open to them or any other progression I guess.. thanks!
