I'm wondering if anyone's tried a stunt like this with a Meadowlark(apologies to Carl64):

Seems like it'd be a fun mod.

Its better to not cut into the opening hole in my opinion but I know guys that do it anyway. The truth is a nicely done easy functioning Wave can be done to one of the Spyderco knives without having to cut into the hole. I think that weakens the blade a lot more than people may want to admit when you cut into the opening hole. Leaving it intact leaves the blade in much better shape for lateral stresses.

I haven't done this yet, but I figure (like STR said previous) you could get by without breaking the 'bird eye or hole'. I don't think you would need a very big wave either, to be effective (photoshopped picture):

I'm sure it does weaken the blade. But then again, if you wanted a strong blade, you wouldn't put a big friggin' hole in it in the first place now, would you? ;)

Seriously, I can't imagine the blade on this knife realistically weakened to anywhere near the failing point, or even being any weaker than the usual weakspot, the pivot.

When the original waved Endura was being discussed on SDF before it imploded, Sal said that they had found that a 'tsunamied' endura lost about 15% in strength. IIRC, Sal said he was surprised that it lost only that much.

The extra large wave makes opening more reliable. Whereas with a smaller wave you usually need to have the knife at the rear of the pocket, and pull outwards and rearwards, with a large wave, if you pull it out of the pocket, its extremely likely to open. It's more reliable than a smaller wave.

Another thing to note is that, while leaving the hole intact is relatively simple on most Spydies, the Byrd series may be more difficult. The Byrd hole extends quite a bit farther forward (toward the tip), meaning that the wave must be placed significantly farther forward. The farther forward the wave is placed, the less smoothly it will work.
