Wave a SMF out of your back pocket?

I've been carrying my SMF in my back right pocket for a while, and sometimes when I pulled it out it'd be half open. Now first I was worried that it was coming open in pocket, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.

If I pull it out while twisting it into the pocket a little, the thumbstud catches the seam and "waves" the knife open.

Just curious to know if anyone else has found this to be true... :)
 
Most knives with large thumbstuds can be Waved the same way. Even Spyderco holes can do it: use a ziptie in the hole and it forms a stud.
 
Similar things have happened to me with knives. I was once sitting in my truch and pulled my knife out and the studs caught my pocket and the blade opened.

With another folder I owned which was a Zero Tolerance 0200 I noticed with that one that the aggressive thumb traction grooves carved into the spine of the blade would catch the corner of my pocket and open the blade and quite reliably but only with tighter fitting jeans. Loose baggy ones it didn't work.

I knew about the Spyderco zip-tie bit, but I guess I never really grew into it. I prefer tip up myself.

Just caught me off guard when I tried it. Pulled it out and it just flipped itself open. Guess I never thought it'd work well, but I can do it pretty reliably.
 
Yeah mine will do that too, but it's hit or miss thumbstud length varies knife to knife so it's possible it's unavoidable or it will never happen.
 
the detent is so strong on my smf that its not a concern for me.

but my sng will open in that manner on occassion.

... I just so happen to be buying a tanto SnG in a week ... :D

Seems like I won't need to. Seriously... the SnG is a "classic" and I couldn't bring myself to hack that one. It's perfect the way it came.

I waved a buck/Strider 889; worked out great.:thumbup:

I'll have to track down another one and do it again.
The pawn shop ended up receiving my last one(traded towards lowering the price on a Game Warden.
Next time you'll all get pics though.:)
 
I'm thinking about TIGing a wave on it. I'll have to see once it's in my hand.
 
that happen to me once, I had a spyderco delica with the steel handle, and i went to reach in my pocket for sum change and i get this burn in my finger, pulled it out fat and there was blood all over. friggin knife opened in the pocket and after that i threw the knife away. I have a thing, If i cut my self with a knife its my fault. If i get cut by a knife and theres no way i had anything to do with it, than the knife is goin in the garbage. cant trust it not to open.never ever had a problem with any other spydercos, or any other knife fer that matter.

How'd it open?? The SS is tip down, and I've never had one of them open on me....
