I've never had a waved knife before, but how can the knife opening in the pocket not cut up your pants when you draw it?

The full length of the cutting edge is above the top of your pants pocket BEFORE the wave catches and starts to open it. The wave only works for tip-up carry.

Emerson has a short video showing the wave at work on his website.

I know. I saw the video several times. Still baffled me until you replied. :)

Just because it opens outside of your pants pocket doesn't mean you can't slice the hell out of the bottom of your jacket or the person standing beside you!

Now that I think of it, Emerson's video was to demonstrate the speed of the wave, not how it works. It would be interesting to see it in slow-mo.

As the other posters have said, by the time Emerson's Wave feature catches on the fabric of your pants, the entire length of cutting edge is oriented away from the fabric and is fully and safely away from the interior of the pocket.

I have seen a gentleman open a Mini CQC-7 at a gun show with too much enthusiasn and leave a gaping hole in the back thigh section of his jeans. That was one of those moments when you're embarassed for another person.

:D

Couldn't tell you about the Emerson but the spyderco works great. If you carry it for right hand carry and pull it, it comes out I standard grip, but if you move it to your left pocket and don't move the clip then it comes out in a reverse grip which is wicked. I have carried mine off and on for about a year and trust us when it opens only the spine of the blade touches your pants. Some have complained about the Emerson being rough on your pants and they are talking about the actual wave part that catches on your pocket. The spyderco wave is very smooth and won't mess with your pants

I have a spyderco endura wave, and had that same worry when I got it. However, searching this knife on youtube may put you at ease. I would be more worried about RIPPING my pants with the wave, not cutting them with the blade--so no slacks, but jeans and casual pants/khakis are no biggie.
