I'm a lefty and I'm wondering if I could take a wave apart and change the positions of the blades so they were in lefty friendly positions in the handles. Do you think that would work? I don't have a wave, but if I could do that I would be VERY tempted to get one of the new revamped ones.

I highly, highly doubt that it would work. You have to get a special set of tamper-proof drivers or file down the colums in the center of the heads just to even take the tools out, After that, I'd be surprised if you could just switch them around. I guess the lefties real got the short end with the Waves.

You can get the tamper proof Torx wrenches from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com) but I think the issue with swapping the blades may be an exercise in futility.

Remember that to lock up a blade is ground at a slight angle on the back side and that angle wouldn't match up to the opposite locking bar.

As a Lefty I've never really found the need to swap the blades on my Wave and I've been carrying and using it every day for the better part of two years.

You've got a good point on the liner lock, I'd forgotten about that. I am very happy to hear you are satisfied with it as is.

Hello Brian T,

I looked at the McMaster catalog page that you referenced and found drivers for the 6-lobe tamperproof Torx screws. The Leatherman tools use the 5-lobe tamperproof Torx. Am I looking at the wrong page in the McMaster catalog? Please let me know as I'd love to get drivers for my Leathermen tools.

thanks - Joe

I often open the blades on my Wave with my left hand. I start with my middle finger and halfway I take over with my thumb. For closing I push the liner away with my middlefinger and close with my "pointing finger" (I forgot the English name for it). Works fine for me.

Index finger.

Good thread.

A few buddies are left handed. I don't understand why more products like the Leatherman/Swiss/any other line, don't come out with left hand versions.

Funny, once Smokey Mtn. had left handed Case canoes. Got one guy one to pay for some freee work he'd sone for me.

It hung him up. He'd been opening RH knives for so long, to open a LH one was unnatural.

Never thought of it that way.

Joe,

I can honestly say I'd never looked to see if the Wave used a 5-point or 6-point Torx screw--until now. I think McMaster only has the 6-point wrenches as you mentioned.

Sorry.

I have a charge ti. You can't switch over the blades becuase of the liner locks as explained above and the lack of room by the tip of the file and saw. The saw tip shares room with the lanyard ring unless you have the lanyard ring extended out and the belt clip and removable lanyard share room with the file tip so i don't belive there would be enough room to switch the blades over to the file and saw positions.

With that said i have no problem opening the knives with my left hand (i'm left handed). I jsut use the method as explained above and it seems to work fine.
