I just bought myself a new Leatherman tool (Wave) and I was wondering if it would be a good wilderness and survival Knife. I saw Les Stroud using one on his show. Does anyone have the Wave, if so do you have any comments or concerns relating this tool. Thanks!

I think, that if your skills and knowledge were good, that it would be a fine tool. Chopping, of course, would be out and I doubt that you could baton it, but many people have survived with a lot less...

My Leatherman NEVER leaves my side, well accept to use it, but then its right back into its sheath.....on my side.

Thats the one thing I would want with me the most. The blades get nice and sharp and I find pliers to be about indispensible. Don't forget the saw, what a fantastic little saw it is. Sissors, how great is it to always have sissors.

And of course, mans best little mechanical friend, the bottle opener.

Well i love my Ti for out door uses but theres one problem with letherman tools there HEAVY. But i still love and bring mine out doors, so have a blast with it.

I love my new Wave. I just moved to my new house and I use it hard to repair things around the house, it never let me down. I was considering the Charge Ti for its 154CM knife, but since I always carry fixed blade or a bigger folder like the Endura in the outdoor then the Wave will do just fine.

I would say that with a good fixed blade and the Wave you would be set. I always take it with me when outdoors along with a Fallkniven F1. Both are strong and very reliable tools. I would say that without a fixed blade the Wave may be lacking in strength of the blades. For small stuff the Wave does a fine cutting job.

I think that the new Wave is one of the better multitools for the outdoors. The one thing that the Wave is missing is an awl. I could do without the little eyeglass screw driver and would much rather have an awl instead. The one hand opening knife blades are nice, but they are more of a supplement to a larger fixed blade or locking folder than a replacement.

I have carried one since they came out, the clip blade lock got a little loose so I sent it back to Leatherman and they sent me a new one free last year.

I agree with shottgunner11, the saw is great, much more usefull than it would seem at first. When you need a clean edge on branches for construction around camp it is perfect.

I would just add a small saw like the Gerber Sportsman Saw. That is my PSK cutting combo: Leatherman Charge Ti, CS True Flight Thrower and a Gerber Sportsman Saw. I keep the Leatherman Charge clipped in my pocket. It does not seem heavy, I do not notice it during the day. Yet it comes to hand quickly and opens like any one hand folding knife.

My wave doesn't leave by belt. I used to carry a Gerber Pro Scout but I alway wanted to try a Leatherman. I got a New Wave in a Gun show for about $38.00. I It is by far the best, most complete multitool I've owned. I'm sure there may be better ones out there, but IMO the Wave rules.

If you have any doubts about its usefulness in a survival situation consider this:

The Wave is awesome. I've carried one every day at work for the last 7yrs. Working on a maintenance crew I've used it for damn near anything you can think of. Never had a problem with the weight, hardly notice its there, but miss it when I am not carrying it. I've never been in a survival situation, but I am sure it would be enough it thats is all you had.

Not sure if fixing a snowblower during a 15" snowfall counts as survival, but that day it did.

I really like both Leatherman and the Swisstool. One of the best features I like about Leatherman tools (for the Wave and the Charge), is the pouch...it let's you keep a couple of essentials with you without any thought:

Small 1XAAA LED
DMT mini sharpener
Ferro rod

Your Wave would be a good addition to any kit you get assembled...just make sure you get in the habit of wearing it daily so it becomes as normal as putting on your socks and underwear:D
