First time in this forum; have carried/used an old original Leatherman for years, still looks and works good, but wanted the locking feature so talked my wife into getting me a Wave for X-mas. I haven't used it enough to form a strong opinion but it seems O.K.; just doesn't seem all that better than the original(except for locking). Opinions?

that depends on your definition of "better". the new wave has the following major changes:

1) locks on handles

2) interchangeable bits

I don't mind the lock, it is useful at times, the interchangeable bits are arguable as I have seldom used them.

I think you can certainly say that it is "improved" in some areas whereas others i feel they should have kept he original design (namely the scissors).

I honestly believe that the fit and finish of the LM tools was better pre-2004 revamp. They are very good tools, but I just think they took a step back in order to give us innovation.

I prefer the old Wave. It doesn't have the locks, or bits. I tried a new Wave, but got rid of it and bought two of the older Waves. The new model is fine, but I didn't really find the bit driver/bits to be of benefit for the uses in which I use a multitool on a daily basis.

I have a friend that offer me a pre 2004 wave that is new (for a game boy and 12 games i offer)

should I accept? is the "older wave" worth it? or is the new one better?

thanks
Maxx

A big plus for the old Wave is the extended reach of the phillips driver. Recessed screws may not be reachable with the bit exchanger of the new Wave.

I don't like the new proprieatary bits , way too hard to replace , not enuff quality or variety . I use an Old Skool Universal Tool Adapter on all my multis .It takes 1/4" hex , available in any hardware store . I prefer the old wave , and Supertool . I believe build quality was better . If they were still around , I would still be rocking a Sideclip .

I don't know what the dollar equivalency is with this trade, but I have no use for a Game Boy, while the Wave is quite useful to me. I wouldn't hesitate to make the trade (especially since it is the old model). New model, I'd just go out to Walmart and buy one.

I like the new Wave, however I really don't find that the locks or the bits really improved on anything. Anything I would be using the blade on the Leatherman for wouldn't be anything rough anyway, so the lock really isn't needed. For that, I have an EDC knife on me..

Ditto - The original Wave is still my favourite LM - I had an original Wave stolen out of a vehicle - toyed with the idea of getting a Titanium Wave but didn't like the removable bits. Took me 3 years to find an original Wave in a gunshop and it's the closest thing to an EDC for me (not allowed to carry knives in Australia) - then late last year scored an NIB original Black 20th Anniversary Wave (safe queen) and also got the new 25th Anniversary Wave (safe queen).

traded the game boy for the wave
thanks guys!

is it normal that the handles have play\wobble when in closed position, when open it does have no play
what could it be worth if I ever wanted to sell it? (new with box and leather sheath)
