Has anyone tried making a thumbstud attachment to make a wave catch
on their knives if so how about some explanations or pics. I was thinking
of removing a thumbstud and replacing it with a "milled hook" of some sort.
Just an idea.

You mean the way Mr, Emerson has been doing on his knives for years? There are people that HAVE been modding their knives that way. I am sure that if you did a search, that the results would have you reading many a thread.

STR has permission from Emerson to do a wave type mod, you might ask him which knives he can do. Beyond that, people have bought Spyderco models with high holes, and dremeled the front of the hole away into an impromptu wave.

I have seen one or two people try to do little add-on hooks, like you're talking about, but that's it.

Thanks Joe.

The knives with thumb discs instead of thumb studs are pretty easy to add a Wave to by simply replacing the disc with a new fitted and bent hook. Its so easy and convenient I'm surprised Ernie Emerson doesn't just do them this way rather than build them into the knife permanently as he does. With the add on those who don't care for the Wave could remove it and go with a regular blade with the thumb disc only. For those that didn't want the Wave, it may also open the option back up to do the tip down carry mounting of the pocket clip for many users that prefer that. (which by the way was how Ernie made his knives until he came up with the Wave) The option to remove the Wave seems to be a plus to some. This option of using the thumb disc also opens up the possiblility to Wave knives that otherwise could not be Waved at all by notching the blade. (See pic of Emerson Persian that is not usually a candidate for a Wave)

On regular thumb stud knives: If you had the means to make the bends you could theoretically make a Wave by cutting out a "T" shaped piece of metal or titanium and bending the top of the T down so that it could stradle the blade like a saddle. It would have holes drilled to mount on the blade using the original thumb stud hole. One side of the T bend would probably need to be threaded though. Then take the long piece left of the T and bend it up in a hook shape similar to a Wave. Once mounted I'm sure it would work but I don't have the equipment to make those kind of bends in small pieces like that. It may be possible to make the bends on a long piece first and then cut off the excess but then there would be so much waste with that I don't think it is feesible for more than maybe just one or two. Especially with the prices of steel and in particular titanium right now. Besides the difficulty in making the bends nice and neat: to make those kind of sharp bends in titanium it usually needs to be heated to a cherry red color first or it will just snap rather than bend.

Thanks guys. STR I might try the T shaped add on. I think more knves should
have this option.
