Just curious if Ernie is sending out any new customs with the wave. I am waiting for the the opportunity to buy my first Emerson custom for daily carry from one of you. BTW, I for one would be willing to pay more than $2500 for a custom (see F/S cqc5 post) if it had the wave. If you have a custom waved cqc8 or Mach-1 in the works, e-mail me & name your price!

Sniper308,
Very nice! Looking at that Wave, it looks different than the one on my 2000 Commander, not as big. Is that correct, or is it just the angle of the picture? Also, any reason why the 8s aren't ti bolstered? Are bolsters for strength or looks? Jeez, lot's of questions. Thanks in advance for the replies. :-)

Dave: Good questions. I had to go get my calipers to check for you.

I compared the wave between the Custom 8 and a 98 Production Commander and found that they are actually exactly the same heighth. The wave on the Custom 8 is a little more rounded on top than the one on the Commander and the indention on the Commander is a little deeper than the one on the 8. Nevertheless the wave feature works flawlessly on both knives.

On the Custom 8 the wave extends no higher than the top of the scale and the wave on the Commander extends almost a 1/4 inch above the top of the scale.

As to a bolstered Custom 8 I have never seen one and don't believe that they exist. Yet.

As to whether a bolster adds additional strength to a knife I would doubt it, and personally I think it is for appearance sake. Someone else, particularily a knifemaker, may have different information and could shed additional thoughts on this.

My understanding is that bolsters were originally added to knives for strength. This provided a solid base for the pivot.

However, with the strength of modern materials, bolsters are simply for looks.

Niiiiice Don. Is that a chisel, or a double bevel? I've decided that my new psychotic fixation is the 8, rather than the 6... something about the look of the blade. I LOVE that wicked curve it has, and the double bevel version looks just that much meaner. Add the wave, and voila! Perfection.

Hopefully there'll be some available at Xmas bonus time...
