Me again ;-)

Is it correct that only the 7B knives come with the wave, or are there some waved 7A knives out there? I did see a picture of a waved 7A on a website linked from an article on this board (but cannot find it now).

Second question. If I buy an unwaved 7A, is there enough meat in the "cliff" to grind a decent wave into? Comparing pictures, it seems to me that the tip of the waved 7Bs extend a bit further out than the flat bit on the 7A.

The reason I am asking is that, though I think the tanto edge is cool, and I could work with it, the curved blade on the 7A might fit better as a general purpose cutting tool. On the other hand, I could get a waved 7b now, and get a mini-7a later on as a "pocket" knife. Oh, the agony of choice... ;-)

At this point the Full Sized "B" (aka Tanto) is the only waved CQC7.

The picture you saw is either a one off Proto or more likely Computer generated (I have seen one shot like that, I believe on CDNN's catalog)

Is there enough meat to "Make your own"? Yea, it's been done.

I asked if the Emersons were going to bring out a Waved CQC7A and the answer was something like "Sure, I don't know when".

You might also take a look at the Spearpoint SOCFK. It has the waved Spearpoint blade and a guard.

Hi John,

I had wondered about that.

Hmmm. Just called Richard at BR Knives in Tucson. He has 7bs for 100 bucks, but the waved versions are 25 bucks more. Still not too bad, from the sounds of it you guys figure the feature is worth the 25 anyway. ;-)

Interestingly, from a QC point of view, he said he personally had had no problems with any of the Emersons he has stocked. Nice to hear.

So, it looks like rolling my own involves a small chainsaw file, a padded vice, and some careful filing. Of course this will bung up the blade finish. Gotta think on this one.

I am not sure I want to wait. ;-)

Yes, but a bit bigger and bulkier than I want, I think. Let me hop over to the website and check it out again.

Thanks!

Clinton:

I certainly would never tell another knife nut what to buy (to each their own). Having said this, I suggest you get yourself to a local blade store which carries EKI. Find a 'waved' model and start playing with it in the store. At the same time, choose a 'non-waved' model and you will immedeately see the reason why there are so many Usual Suspects!

I started off with a BM Emerson and graduated to a EKI CQC-7 (#166/99). Although both are great knives, neither have the wave. Both sit quietly in their boxes in my safe. Now when I put any other non-waved knife in my pocket, I find myself instinctively 'waving' them out.

Go get a 'wave'! ;)

You can make your own Wave, if you must have a waved 7A, but it's not as tall as the one on a factory Waved knife-thumbramp's too short. Mine works fine, though.
Just took a few minutes with a Dremel tool. Be sure and vice the blade. When I went back to bevel the edges of the cutout, I did it with the knife assembled and in one hand (:rolleyes:dummy), and managed to scratch the finish a little when I slipped.
Next 7 I buy will have a factory Wave.
Here's a pic of my homemade Wave, and the Dremel attachment I used to make it.

Hi Owen,

Thanks, nice picture to see how it is done. In retrospect, I have decided to get a waved 7b (green handles I hope) and do it right for 25 extra bucks. If I want a clip blade later on, I might get a mini 7a for "general" use and backup. Of course, If I wait long enough, maybe they will make a waved 7a anyway. I am pretty sure I can live with the asymmetrical chisel grind. Especially since I am ambidextrous. ;-)

That is a nice solid looking blade base. Nice big pivot hole to.

Best regards
