My first Emerson (Mini CQC7BW) came in the mail yesterday and I've already ordered my second (CQC7B--the one without the Wave). I'm really impressed with the way the Mini feels. It was (is) kinda of stiff and tight but it's already loosening up with one day's use. I like this knife.

...Except for one thing. I wear Tru-Spec cargo pants...the ones with the dedicated knife/flashlight pockets on each side. Those side pockets are narrow but perfect for most of my knives and I love how Tru-Spec fits and has huge and deep front and cargo pockets. Lots of room for all the stuff I carry daily.

In less than 24 hours, I've cut myself twice because the damn Wave hook caught on my knife pocket and I didn't realize the knife had opened. The second time was the last straw--it caught on the inside seam of my pocket, got hung up, gave me a minor stabbing and I almost had to take off my pants to get the damn knife loose. It was probably a funny sight, this old fat guy trying to get loose a half opened knife that was partially hanging out of his pocket while his hand was dripping blood. At the time, it wasn't very funny to me. I was so PO'd I got my Dremel and cut off the Wave hook. It's not a perfect job but it's not too ugly either--I can live with it. The best thing is the knife no longer catches on my pocket. Screw the warranty, I wanted that hook gone!

Which brings me to my question. I would like to eventually buy on of the V-grind models. Does anyone know if it's possible to order a knife from Emerson and have the Wave hook removed by special request before shipping? Of course I would expect to pay extra for this. I think I recall reading at one time that Emerson would remove the Wave if a knife was sent to them for modification. If buying a new knife with the Wave already removed is possible, it could save me from mutilating future knives to prevent mutilating my hands and clothing.

I feel your pain. You can pull the knife up just enough to be able to grab the blade with your fingers and prevent opening, unless your knife pockets are made so this just won't work. Or, you can just full on wave it out of your pocket.

That being said, I have no idea if EKI will remove a wave on request, but they have made some nice waveless models. The Specwar, waveless CQC-8, A-100, A-100 Mini, Persian, just to name a few off the top of my head.

Give them a call on Monday. I'm sure they'll be able to answer your question. In the mean time, I'll be glad to help you with that troublesome mini. You can send it to me ;)

I have considered doing this to my commander many times. I cannot seem to consistently wave it and most of the time I end up with it partially opened. Would be easier and safer to just use the disk on it.

Just pull the knife up and towards the front of the pocket instead of the back, you'll get used to it.

Or as others have said, pull up enough to grab the blade also.

Yeah, I never really intended to use the Wave feature anyway. However, I didn't realize I couldn't just ignore it. Been carrying the Mini 7 today and I like it much better without that hook. Slides out of my pocket smoothly now. I'm really likin' this knife.

Unfortunately that doesn't work with the Tru-Spec pants using the knife pockets. The pockets are too narrow.

Well as you know, Emerson offers a decent amount without the wave and you could try calling about having a knife done without a wave.

If all else fails, get a hold of a custom knife modder here on the site and send in your knives to have it ground off and it will still look good like it was from the factory.

Good Luck!

EKI used to do wave removal if you ordered direct from them but I believe that they don't anymore. If you haven't had a lot of experience with the wave feature, it does take a lot of time to get used to. For me its now become muscle memory how I drew the knife out of my pocket depending if I want to employ the wave or not. It just takes practice.
