waxed cotton gear advice

So I was able to procure some martexin waxed cotton fabric to make a modified haversack from. The place I bought it from didn't have the color I wanted in the weight I was looking for and so I picked up the color I wanted in a sail cloth weight and then another color in a heavier weight. My plan has been to double up the fabric with the brighter color on the inside and my desired color on the outside.

As I lay in bed last night I started wondering if doubling up two layers of waxed cotton would lead to mildew problems if the bag got thoroughly soaked. Will the space between the two layers breathe well enough for this to not be a problem? I've been around enough waxed canvas tents to know I don't want my bag to smell like mildewed canvas.

Anybody have any experience in this area or do you have a place to direct my question?

Thanks

TLR, The company Filson makes double thick waxed cotton coats and pants. Not sure if their construction mitigates the mildew issue or not. Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for that info. I decided to try and breathe through the fabric and found that I couldn't which makes me think the mildew issue might be a reality. I'm not sure it would but also not sure it wouldn't. I found another piece of fabric that isn't the color I originally wanted but is acceptable and so sold off the other and am going to go with one layer for peace of mind.

Thanks for responding!

You could always try brass grommets to allow air between the layers to help dry it out, that's what they used on my drover's cost it's waxed canvas double layered and at 20 years old all I smell is the wax.
