Waxed pants ?

dont waste your money on the marks pants PITDOG. I gots em, they are VERY comfortable, BUT not waterproof. Water proof brushing against wet brush for an hour, but yer on your own after that.

I don't know about pants but I use the heck out of waxed chaps. There are certain places that I hunt that I would not get caught without them. The ones I have are from Cabelas and could not be happier with the quality or price. Chris

I haven't personally applied it myself, but I have bought cotton clothing with a DWR treatment that works great. Although I understand it will not work as well after washings, but I believe can be reapplied.

For what it is worth, while working as a wildland firefighter I found chainsaw chaps to work excellent for breaking wet waist deep brush in Alaska all day long. They also help with thorny brush as well (lots of Devil's Club up in AK).

Plus they have a dual purpose if you cut wood a lot.

Hey Pit,

I don't know much about "waxed" cloth (the Filsons, et al) stuff, but i just bought some "Firehose" work pants from Duluth Trading and i've never, ever seen anything like these things. Ever.

They are super strong/heavy duty canvas (11.5oz?) and have some sort of DWR coating. I walked in the woods yesterday with my kids following some deer tracks in the snow - kneeling in snow, sitting, etc for an hour and the fabric didn't wet through. I was completely surprised having expected to get a little wet (especially my knees), but it didn't happen.

I must admit these are the most money i have ever spent on a pair of non-dress pants (i'm a cheap-skate when it comes to clothes) - ~$50, but i can tell i'll have them for years. I usually squeeze about 2 years max., out of a pair of jeans/cargos, but these particular pants i'm pretty sure i'll get at least 4 years if not more. I simply cannot get over how strong this fabric/construction is. It's like the whole thing is as heavy-duty as the "reinforced" part of other cargo's i usually buy. I'm ordering another pair today!!!

The *only* drawback to them is that my wife hates 'em. Oh well, these are one fashion faux paux i'm willing to make simply for the enjoyment of wearing 'em. I did promise to not wear them on our dates or family outings so that's a fair compromise for her not complaining. She has a particular knit hat i utterly un-enjoy (aka hate, but i don't like to use that word) that i may invoke a similar ban on, but i digress.

Seriously, do a search on "firehose pants" or duluthtrading.com and i believe you'll be good to go.

I treated a pair of Carhartt bibs with the Filson retreatment and they have worked excellent for several years now. Not pretty but they keep me dry when working outside in the rain.

Pitdog - check out Kakadu.
I've had one of their waxed oilskin drover coats for years and have worn out a coupld of their oilskin fishing vests as well.
not as bulletproof as Filson, but I got 2-3 years worth of daily wear out of a vest before the stuff in my pockets started wearing through. Stayed waterproof the whole time, though - and at the time was only $50.
Point is, they also make oilskin pants and chaps for <$100, so it might be worth looking into.
