Question: If you keep your handles oiled, what's the point of waxing it?

Matt

There's no point. I think waxing is a good idea if you are going to store your axe for a long time. Otherwise, I think that waxing is inferior to oiling; I especially dislike the slick surface that you get with waxing.

I alternate paste wax and linseed/tung oil mix. The oil dissolves the wax layer and combines with it. The reason for wax is it is much easier and faster for a frequently used tool. If you rub them both off with an old piece of denim the finish never gets too slick. It will stay a nice smooth satin. The wax is also really ideal for putting on heads as rust prevention and stays put with a sheath over top

For a long time I used Minwax stain my handles, but the last time it didn't take too well and I ended up with some bad grain eruption. Maybe it's because the bottle of Minwax I was using is from 1998. Whatever. I rehafted the tomahawk but went a different route: I scorched it with a propane torch, lightly sanded it, and put on two coats of marine grade polyurethane. Looks good.

Most of the time(for us anyway) a wax is used after an oil on a figured wood...The stain(aqua fortis) pops the chatoyance, the oil makes it stand out and the wax shines it...Thats the case with curly handles anyway...

Thanks for the thoughts.

Kentucky, what kind of wax do you use on curly hawk handles? Carnauba?
