Waxpaper for storing Blades?

Hello,
I was wondering whether anyone has tried wrapping their collector knife blades' in waxpaper prior to storing them for long periods of time? I have noticed that some of the best preserved blades I found that were new and never taken from the box that were wrapped this way, seemed to be in the best shape...

Also, would putting a light coat of oil - say WD-40, be a good measure to ensure good storage and least chance of rust?

Thanks very much!

I dislike WD-40 for rust protection. The carrier evaporates off very quickly leaving a shellac like deposit that is a pain to get off. It also has a habit of migrating in moving parts and gumming them up as well. Better off using a fine machine oil or gun oil like Rem-Oil.

As for the wax paper...haven't ever tried it. I keep my knives in a cigar humidor bought just for them. Instead of using a moisture source as I do with my cigars I used a couple of 40 gram rechargeable silica gel canisters to keep the humidity down. Plus it is a handsome way to store your knives and cheap humidors can be found many places online.

In 35 years of using WD 40, I have never seen it leave a deposit. It will dissolve old oils and gunk, and if you don't use enough this residue will remain when the carrier dries.
WD 40 is not a good rust protector, though.

What about a silicone spray? I have some that says:
LUBRICATES
PENETRATES
CLEANS
DRIES
PROTECTS - surfaces with a colorless, non-conductive film barrier against moisture and corrosion.

I am referring to long term, 5+ years of storage. When I had my gunshop it was not uncommon for someone to bring in a gun that they had lubed and put away and now it wouldn't function. Actions so gummed up they wouldn't cycle and almost everytime the customer said he sprayed it down with WD-40 before putting it up.

WD-40 is a good product but not for long term storage. One thing it does do very well is displacing moisture so for cleaning rain soaked gear it does great. Even it's name indicates this was what it was designed for WaterDisplacement-formula40. I know a lot of people like this product but at the same time I wonder if any have really tried long term storage with it. I use it myself but prefer fine machine oil (very light usage) and a dry environment for my knives and firearms.
