I recently received my Spyderco Sharpmaker 204. Excellent sharpening system...it got my "sorta" dulled blades shaving sharp in no time.

This has probably been mentioned a gillion times, but I must mention it myself. Hey Sal, you should consider an acting career! That was quite a good and relaxed performance you gave in the videotape. I was enjoying it a lot, but I must admit that when the tape got to the bit about sharpening hardware I think I will never or hardly ever use, I had to turn it off. Besides, I couldn't wait to use my brand new product!

Congrats again for an excellent package. Btw, Sal, if you wanna get into the movie business, you could always call this agent friend of mine

Flood,

So the video is THAT good, huh?.

I bought a "used" (but "like-new") Spyderco Sharpmaker 203, and bugged Sal enough, that I THINK he is having one of these Sharpmaker Instructional videos sent to me.

Is the 204 that much better than the 203? Glockman, it's good to hear you've had good results with your used 203 and you should be getting a tape. Why is the tape so good?
Just wondering.

The tape is that good because you can actually watch Sal use the Sharpmaker. I have a 203 and it does a great job, but at first I was a little hesitant to use it "properly" until I saw the tape. I read the sharpening FAQs here on BFC and searched lots of sharpening posts. Over and over I read about "a couple of strokes..." "I got it razor sharp with 5 or 6 strokes on the stone..." etc. The Sharpmaker instructions call for 20-40 strokes! Different materials, blah, blah, blah, I know, but still, I was a little afraid to have at my blades for 40 strokes when it seemed like that was way too many. Getting to watch Sal go through the process (it's just like the instructions but better to see it in person) and achieve the result inspired the confidence I needed to take the plunge. And guess what, it works! Think of it like this, if you'd never seen a parachute in your life but read in a book that they work, would you jump? But, watch a few demonstration jumps and suddenly it's not so crazy.

There is a little history attached to the 204 video. Spyderco's first knife related product was the 203. Sal and his wife lived on the road going from fair to fair selling these (and living in a converted bread truck) for LOTS of years.

The 204 video is essentially Sal's info. pitch. I'll ask his wife, but I'd put money on the fact that he probably gives sharpening instructions in his sleep!

Thanks for your nice comments about the video!

Hi Sal, Hi Joyce,,

I just finished watching the Sharpmaker Instructional video that I received today, and I really have to say a hearty THANK-YOU!

I have run across a MAJOR "problem",
'tho...Since I "only" have the "old" Sharpmaker Model 203, after I watched the video, I find myself wanting, almost NEEDING, to purchase the "new" Sharpmaker Model 204.

...Now WHAT am I gonna tell my wife?.

Hmmm...I HAD to come back...I have a question that I just thought of...Since I HAVE the four Ceramic Stones, and the two brass safety guards, is it possible for me to purchase JUST the Model 204 BASE and slide-on COVER, so that I would then, in effect, HAVE a Model 204 Sharpmaker? (The 4 ceramic stones, and 2 safety guards are in EXCELLENT condition.).
