I hope I'm not out of order on this thread. But I thought that subject matter on "MACHETES" could be posted here. If not then my humble apologies :)

Today at a garage sale I picked up a WAYLETT Machete in brand new, mint condition with sheath included. The guy told me that he bought it back in the early 1980s at a well known local bargain barn that is now out of business. I paid $2 for it and I figure if nothiing else it will make an excellent machete for rough house use. That way I can save my 2 Cold Steel Gurkha Kukris for more important uses.

The Waylett Machete was made in England. It also stated that it was made at the famous Sheffield foundry at Sheffield England. I have heard that there is another top quality machete made in England under the Martindale brand.

What do any of you know about Waylett machetes? Did I get my money's worth :D I couldn't even find out much about them even on a GOOGLE search. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Joe D.

i figure that at 2$ even if its total crap, you got your money's worth because you wont feel bad about using/abusing it. i dont have any information on it but i bet you get more than 2 bucks worth of work out of it.

Yeah "savageknives" I couldn't agree with you more :D Even a piece of Chinese made garbage you get at Rip-Mart would probably be worth $2.

But I do find it sort of odd that England of all places has been known for making possibly the best Machete on the market and that being the well known Martindale line of Machetes and striking tools. The Sheffield foundry for years has had a sterling reputation for putting out great cutlery in years gone by.

So I guess what I'm driving at is this: Maybe I got a higher quality machete than I think>> of course that is wishful thinking. But also the fact that it was made in England who has some of the most tyrannical laws concerning guns and knives on the entire planet would be known for making premium cutlery. It sure is a strange anomaly if nothing else.

Other than Ontario and Cold STeel I'm not even aware of who makes top quality machetes here in the USA. But anyone with any knowledge about the "WAYLETT" machete company will be highly appreciated.

I found one at a flea market
I loaned to to my good friend
He lost it!!!!
(Do you want to sell yours..I make my buddy pay!!..lol)

I rarely see them on EBAY
Maybe once every few years
I haven't been able to find out a whole lot about them, as well

Six year old post and you're thinking this guy still has it, or hasn't beaten it to death?

Dug up some information before I noticed how old the thread was.

E. & I. Waylett was apparently an international trading company based in London. (Which company in Sheffield actually made the machetes is a mystery.) Here's a 1959/1961 reference to their machetes:

U.S. pattern machete with 18 in. Sheffield steel self-color blades,
black plastic handles with 3 rivets,
stamped "Waylett, Made in Sheffield, England."
Waylett (E. & I.) Ltd. (manufacturer)
Empire Building, Duke Street Hill,
London Bridge, [London], S.E. 1
WTD 7/29/59

from Foreign Commerce Weekly, U.S. Dept, of Commerce, April 3, 1961, pages 27-28, in the "World Trade Leads" section.

Another reference to the same Waylett company, at the same address, appears in an Italian business journal from 1959, where Waylett published a notice in search of an Italian importer of crushed tamarind seed that would come from Bombay.
