Wayne Goddard Lightweight - gone forever?

I don't hear much about the discontinued Wayne Goddard Lightweight, but it one of my favorite Spyderco knives. It is just a bit bigger than the Endura, but I prefer the shape of the blade shape on the Goddard and the handle fits my hand well. Any chance that we might see this design again, maybe in VG10?

There are no plans to re-introduce the model right now. One of the sad facts of introducing new Spyderco designs is that we have to discontinue some that have been in the product line for a while to make room for the new. This is what happened to the Goddard Lightweight. I agree, great knife!

He said he tried to incorporate as many of the qualities he liked in a user as possible, into that design. Great knife, absolutely.

That knife is my all time favourite Spydie. It was my EDC for along time. The endura, and police could not displace it outta my pocket. When I got my military, the goddard was sent in for a sharpening at the factory. I was given a new one due to some flaw in the blade and it has been sitting in its box since then.

Put my vote in for the revival of the Goddard.

Hmm Maybe Spyderco should have a new line of classic knives that have been discontiuned, in limited runs. Sort of like what is happening with the Calypso jr this year.

I'm also a fan of the Goddard LW. I've carried mine a lot in the past and still do so from time to time. I also got my Dad one, although he doesn't carry it. It's nice and flat and...lightweight. :) But he's just not a knife person (but at least my step mom carries the pink SAK Classic I got her).

I've been tempted to get the micarta version, but so far lack of money or another knife has won out. Someday...

I'd improve only three things on the Goddard LW:

1. Mold in the "fence" around the clip recess so it doesn't have the well-known tendency to swivel and tear up the FRN. Mine has done okay, but there is still a little damage from some excessive clip movement. I doubt anyone would argue against this.

2. Compared with my old Enduras and Delicas, the FRN seems a bit thin around the pivot and there is too much flex. A tradeoff for having such a thin handle, I suppose. Maybe a touch more thickness there would help? Or is this my imagination? Actually, my new black blade Endura seems pretty tight and non-flexy, so maybe this is a function of individual knives?

3. For me, with my slightly smaller than usual hands for a guy my size, the hole seems a bit farther out than is comfortable for easy openings (longer distance from pivot to hole--don't have my Goddard for comparison right now, but I don't think I'm imagining this). That's why my old Enduras (as well as my new one) and my Delicas are my more constant companions. Delicas open the easiest for me, and Enduras aren't too far behind. (Natives are perfect, BTW.) So for me, I'd bring the hole in on the same radius as an Endura. However, folks with larger hands or different preferences wont feel the same way.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Goddard LW come back out in any form, especially in another color!

The way you all feel about the Goddard is the way I feel about the Terzuola StarMate, that it was the high point of Spyderco's knives for me. The only improvements that I could ever see would be a compression lock and, perhaps, a deep blue, but not quite navy blue, color as an option for the scales.

Spoke with Sal today, he said Wayne and him have been dicussing it but I want it as a Jr Model. Sal said no dice since they have to make a new cast for it.

What do you want the Goddard to look like?

Some Kraton perhaps, wire rope damascus (no I'm not joking). Just got a blue native and like the shaping, but perhaps that would require a new mold for the Goddard. A lighter shade of blue might be nice.

I really like the configuration as it is and I realize that it’s expensive to change any of the tooling. With that in mind, I’ll toss these ideals out for consideration: Update to VG-10 steel. Add the Boyle detent. A modest swell/rise in the FRN material to make it a bit more hand filling, which may also put a bit more material around the pivot pin. Some type of groves or checkering milled into the top for better grip (between the lock release and the blade hole). Modify the pocket clip for a lower/deeper carry in the pocket. As for as colors, maybe an OD green.

I bought a Micarta Goddard Junior CE today. My favorite knife dealer found it in the empty boxes he had. While checking the boxes found this one with a knife still inside.

Computer said it is from 1994.

I love this knife. I would love a Micarta one with VG-10 or S30V steel, and PLAIN EDGE! I tried to e-mail Mrs. Goddard at the addrss given in the Spyderco Story book, but it bounced, no longer there, I guess she was selling plain edge version in the past.

This knive is so nice looking, and has the Spyderco hole without the Spyderco hump, really nice.

Is is possible to make a new batch of the old Micarta ones along with the lightweight?

Alan, I agree with you totally. The Baby Goodard was my 1st knife from Spyderco Years ago!!

Mrs. Goddard was the only one to get Plain Edge!! I got 2 of them ... Lucky me!

Nice lady ..

OT ..Hey we must give credit to the wives of makers because they do a lot at shows and behind the scene(Mrs.Goodard,Mrs.Dozier,Mrs.Beers,Mrs. Nealy).

Bring it :D Mine went in for Warranty/Repair, and I got to choose a replacement from the then-current (rplcmnt was a Calypso Jr. ltwt) lineup, but always wished I could have just gotten another Goddard ltwt.
Loved the handles, especially when wearing gloves at work, and the lack of an exaggerated hump for the hole. Carried extremely well for a knife it's size.
Other knives replaced it, but I've always kind of missed that one...
