Do you have any experience with Wayne Hendrix knives? Is he a maker worth checking out? I'm looking for small to medium sized fixed blade knives and have heard a couple of favorable comments about this maker.

Does he have a web site? Any other contact information? Any 'net dealers stock his knives? Thanks!

Stay Sharp,
Sid

Sid,

Wayne is pretty difficult to contact. I've never been able to and have been told to go to the shows he goes to and pick up a knife that way. So far that hasn't happened. Maybe someday.

GenO Denning is also a student of Herron and does excellent work...darn nice! I built a website for him recently at http://www.cavemanengineering.com .

GenO recently got some Kudu horn in and is producing some knives with it. I plan to post some pictures of it this week. I'm partial to the look of Kudu.

GenO's knives are absolutely the best bang for the buck, in my opinion. Fit and finish are excellent (not pretty good...Excellent!!), his prices are extremely reasonable, making time is fast, and he also makes some of the nicest leather sheaths in the business. Outstanding knives from a really nice guy. Check out the Denning Model B. What a phenominal hunter.

Sid, I sent you some mail on a Hendrix I have
available. Good maker with a definite Herron influence. Les and Arizona Custom also have
his knives at times.

Actually, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call him. I have always been able to get through to somebody at his house. Sometimes it is his wife, but sometimes he picks up the phone. A lot of times, he has knives available for immediate sale, but if he is out or you want a custom knife made, you are in for a long wait. I hear he is backed up several years. Reason for the backlog? The man makes knives that are almost exactly like George Herron's, and charges prices like $80-200. Uses ATS34, and A2, but mostly ATS34. I told him last year to make me up a couple of his guardless small hunters in A2. I imagine it will be a while before I get them, but he quoted me a price of around $70-80.

I actually just checked out his website a couple weeks ago, liked what I saw and ordered 2 directly through his site. He says up front that his responce time is slow. As of yet I have not received confirmation or given a wait time. Fingers are crossed as he has super designs and his prices are flat out amazing. Offhand I am expecting a waiting time of approx. 2 years.

I saw Wayne at a small show last weekend. He had a bunch of knives. Probably sold a bunch too. He did work for George Herron for several years and you can see a definite Herron influence in his work.

IMO, Wayne makes an excellent knife at a great price. He also is one heck of a nice fella to talk to. Give him a call and order one of his knives. You won't be sorry.

I have two knives from Wayne, bought through Arizona Custom Knives, a Mod. 1 and a Mod. 3. In my opinion they are amazing knives and the best value I have come across in a long time. You can't go wrong with a Hendrix, either as a collector or as a hunter.

Alex

Blademan, a word of caution. I ordered two Hendrix knives directly off his website at least 2 years ago. I never received any response to either my orders or subsequent emails attempting to confirm these orders. I've long since given up hope. I hope your case is different, but I'd back it up with a phone call if I were you.

Sorry to hear that, Paul. Thanks for the heads-up, though. I will try and reach Wayne by phone and place my order that way. Hope it works out.

I had the same luck as Paul ordering on his website. Never heard a word about the order. Email was never answered either.

Hi Yall I just looked at Waynes web page to see what a #1 and a #3 was the 1 looks like the Herron #2 of which Mr. George and myself did collabration on together recently. The 3 is Mr. Georges #6 which we all three make. Most of the Herron models we both make. Imagine that, guess that kinda trickles down from your teacher. I have been very proud to have been to "Herron University" he is teaching me to read and write now. Yall take care.

If Wayne just came from a show, there is a decent chance that he didnt sell ALL of his knives from the show. Call him and you may be surprised. You may get lucky.

I bought a Hendrix stag handled "Y2K" model small fixed blade awhile back. It's a neat little fixer with a nice hand filling stag handle. I paid a very reasonable price for what I got. I like it but the fit and finish is not near as nice as Mike Irie's knives which are in the same price range. Hendrix' sheaths are nicer than Mike's but Mike's knives are little jewels IMHO.
I have heard a lot of feedback about Gen0's knives which are also in the same price range as Hendrix and Mike Irie. Paul sent me some pics and they look great. My good friend Dex Ewing and Kelly, (Senator), have visited Gen0's shop,(Kelly as you may know made his own at Gen0's). They both told me what a great guy he is and how nice his knives are. If you can't get a Hendrix, give Mike Irie and Gen0's stuff a look. They're available, quality, inexpensive and both are good guys.

I've certainly had the same experience with Wayne as most of you. I even called some folks in SC who knew him to try to get ahold of him that way. I went to alot of trouble, many emails and phone messages...not answered. I think he's pretty busy. I finally gave up. Like I said, I think that your best bet is through a show, although you might find some at a custom knife purveyor.

I agree with Gene, GenO make VERY good knives in the same price range. In fact, I would say GenO's knives are at the top of the heap in terms of finish in the price range and his sheaths are outstanding. I've purchased several. He's also a very good fella.

I can't speak to Mike's knives, but from what I've seen they also look very nice.

Jeff
