Hello,
I'm looking for a different way to remove rust from blades. What I use now is Water and Baking Soda mixed together, and applied to blade with a toothbrush. Works like a dream. But it's a lot of effort and mess for some surface rust. If you have any ways you use, please tell me.

Soak in wd-40 and use very light pressure with a brass or nylon brush, depending on surface coating. Works great.

Bike chain cleaner worked on my utility knife, not kitchen friendly though.

Vinegar and a heavy duty, canvas-like cloth seems to work well.

Instead of using a toothbrush with the baking soda & water, try using just a paper towel or rag as the 'scrubber' with it. Can apply a little more pressure under the fingertips this way. The bristles on a toothbrush can be a bit soft for the job, and the 'grit' tends to diffuse away from the tips of the bristles, leaving the nylon bristles doing most of the scrubbing. Using a paper towel under fingertip pressure sort of concentrates the baking soda 'grit' under your finger tip, and makes it work more aggressively on rust. Reducing the water in the mix also makes the baking soda dissolve more slowly, which keeps the grit working longer. The paper towel will also be a good indicator of when the rust is gone, as it won't be stained red/brown when the blade is clean.

How about using wood? We know normal use will knock of most rust, why not use a stick and some light compound to rub out medium rust.
