I’ve been looking for an affordable alterative to the CLP I use on my firearms that I also use on my knives. After thinking about it my folding and fixed blade knifes really don’t require the same treatment. They have few if any moving parts, and cleaning is easily accomplished with soap and water. They do need to be oiled but primarily for corrosion resistance and protection. Looking around I came upon the WD-40 specialty lubricants ie: Silicone lub, White Lithium, and Long term corrosion inhibitor. I was wondering if anyone here has tried any of these products on their knives and what they think? Opinions in general appreciated too. Like I said I realized that I’ve been using very expensive CLP designed for firearms that really isn’t necessary for a knife. Even Benchmade Blue lube runs $5+ an ounce.

Thanks!

Never tried it. I stick with Hoppes #9 and Mobil 1 synthetic on both knives and guns. A quart of Mobil 1 goes a long way. Even the AR-15 gets a shot of Mobil 1 before a range session. Wal-Mart Super Tech synthetic 5-30W works just as well for less money than Mobil 1.

I've only used the 'standard' WD-40. So long as the knife is kept clean, that's most of the battle, and most any lube will do. Dirt mixed in with the lube is what makes most of the headaches. Lube is at it's best when used very lightly, and the little bit of mineral oil left behind from WD-40 seems to fit that bill, for me.

WD 40 is good stuff.
It's popular on the Internet now to say WD 40 is bad for this or that. I have used it on guns and knives for 40 years professionally. It's not magic, but if you understand what it does WD 40 is very useful.

I second the Mobile 1 synthetic. I put some in a litttle 2 oz. plastic squeeze bottle and use it on most all of my knives except those used for food. (And I thought I was the only one who used Mobile 1 for knives.)

One quart will most likely provide enough for your lifetime.

Thanks again for the replies. My purpose in posting as stated is looking for an affordable alternative to the Cleaner, Lubricant, and Preservative (CLP) commonly used on firearms for my knives. Break-Free CLP that I use on my guns is expensive and in my opinion overkill for the intended purpose of preventing corrosion or rust on a knife. As suggested WD-40 would probably fit the bill just fine. The new line being offered by WD-40 and 3-1 oil focus on rust inhibitors and corrosion prevention. At $4 or less a can this is an attractive alternative. I don't see the need to use products that cost $1-$10 an ounce when I only need the benefit of corrosion prevention, and not so much cleaning and lubricating.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your opinions and experiences. It's much appreciated.

I've used WD-40 on my knives (cheap and expensive) for as long as I can remember.
And it works just as good as anything else.
Great when used in combination with compressed air to flush out "crap"
