All my brothers, sisters, & me....

Sing along, you all know the tune.

I seem to have went on a buying spree here lately. Right now at the house, on top of the "knife box" I've got a Busse Fat Battle Mistress (sage/camo), Basic 9 (with BB kydex), Rat Daddy (with Dundee rig), Rat Mastiff (with borrowed sheath from DF), Dog Father, S6 (with Kydex), and last but not least a Dumpster Mutt (with Kydex). Almost forgot the Skeleton Warden in kydex around my neck.

I've justified this with a quest for "The" Ohio chopper. There are still one or two variations of the FBM that I haven't handled, but I'm close to making a decision. The hard part is deciding which one's to let go. I can't really afford to keep all 5 of the big boys (FFBM, B9, RD, RM, DF). Well, I might but I'd need a second or third job.

Anyway, I've got a couple of questions. The FFBM & Rat Daddy are minty, unused. I want to put them head to head with some other blades, but I hate to do that if I think I might move them along. Is there a formula to figure how much the value will decrease with light chopping use? I don't plan on damaging the edges, just chopping wood. What do you guys think?

I really thought that I'd be willing to part with the DF once I got the B9, but now I'm not so sure. I thought the FFBM would edge out the RD and/or RM, but they are all have their own unique personalities and it's hard to pick a favorite.

Help...

P.S. The B9 is definitely a keeper, as it (not this particular one) was my first Busse.

Given the fact that there are a lot of FBMs floating around these days I would guess you'd have to ask a little less than what you paid for it to get rid of it with some amount of use. Maybe $50 less??? Anyone's guess. Just my opinion.

$50 less sounds good to me on the FBM. The Swamp Rat is much harder to come by right now and so if you use it, you will eliminate anyone who is looking only for a mint one from the pool of prospective buyers. With Blade right around the corner, it may be a bit more difficult to sell and you may then have to lower your asking price a bit more than usual to find a buyer.

The alternative is to sell both minty and then in the back of your mind, you may always wonder, "what if...". Sure, there is a price to pay associated with using a knife, but I tend to look at this not so much "the price to pay for using a knife" as "the price to pay to have the experience and happiness that goes with a good chopping session."

I say go for it.

I guess there are two way to look at it, one is from the quest perspective "How much is the perfect Ohio Chopper worth to me" and factor all the funds used to get to the final determination as part of that finders fee. The other is strictly from a collectors perspective "What is the most I'm willing to let my collection depreciate". Which sometimes depends on the market demand and other times on the collection itself.

The general rule I like to follow for Busses knives is that in most cases Busse knives will not fall below their "market cost" as long as they are in a condition which allows for them to be brought back to normal. So finish wear, edge dulling, etc. Assuming you paid "close to" the $422 for the sage, I say go out and use it you'll alway recoop that price.

Let me save you the trouble as all of these have been thoroughly tested.....the FBM Proto will SPANK any of the mentioned.:D

Jason, I believe you, but haven't got my nerve up to spend that kind of dough yet, even if I could find one. Willing to consider it:D

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming.

I don't think you would lose a significant amount of money using them...as they are uncommon on the market...now is certainly not the time to sell with Blade right around the corner.....hold out for a month or so and I think you could get closer to the mint value....but even using it once eliminates many prospective buyers, which is really a shame because users are the best ones......I say use them as you will probably get what you put in them back out...and you get the best part of these high performance knives...the actual use! .....I can understand keeping some blades gem...but the ones you have are MADE for clearing rain forest and giant red woods......this is not an offer, but PM sent on users!

I was in the same boat. I couldn't decide whether to just stash my Sage Fatty away or use it. In the end, I decided to use it. I figure that if I do decide to part with it down the road, I could always strip it down to bare INFI, and still probably recover the $422 that I have in it.. ;)

You know what...I am going to go back a bit on what I said earlier. I was assuming a regular run FBM. The fact that you have a Sage means that you could probably use it and still ask what you paid for it.

Since getting the Fn Fat FBM...the original one is going to go.....but I like the fat heavy blades....and the standards on the fatty more than the Mags on the FBM.

/me turns away from the safe and says... Geez man, you liked 'em enough to buy 'em so now go out and USE them. Any minor depreciation will be rewarded to you aplenty while you're out back swingin' em like they were intended!! Otherwise just keep your FFBM and ditch the rest without even trying 'em...

You know, I'm thinking that you guys are right. I went to the trouble and expense of tracking them down, might as well use them. Local weather man said to "refrain from using any gas powered outdoor lawn equipment...due to high ozone levels..." I needed to weedeat and rake/blow/burn leaves. Oh well, guess I'll just have to settle for choppin'. Might try to get pics of my multiple stumps. Insn't the American dream a stump in every yard and a knife in every stump?:D

Stay tuned...

I wish that I had a stump or two in my yard...

Trees, trees, everywhere, and not a stump to chop. :(

The perfect Ohio chopper...Hmm... my opinion is the Zero Tolerance Mistress is a little light and the CGFBM is a little heavy. So, somewhere in between. Two options: the Ergo Battle Mistress which I have never held or take the CGFBM and grind (or file) off the ribs. It will then become prettier and lighter. Tough decisions, especially when you're talking from $500 to $750 a knife.

When I say Ohio, I speak of where they all originate from. I guess if you wanted to get technical, Dan & Patti are in Texas, Skunk is in Idaho, Eric is in Kentucky, and I'm in NC. All are made in Ohio, I think...

Alex, I've had an ergo BM and I preferred the B9. Not a fan of the corrugated bevels. I base this only on look and feel in hand, didn't actually use that one. As for removing them, way more work than I'm willing to put into it. The quest is an expensive undertaking, which is sponsered by Visa:D
