Submitted as a data point. Twice in three weeks, the thumb studs on my WE Esprit have snagged on my pocket as I withdrew the knife and the blade partially deployed. The thumb studs on the Esprit are taller than the height of the scales next to the blade.

Sorry to bring up an old thread… I just got a WE Esprit and I’m curious whether you did anything to address the issue? Did you get a shorter thumb stud?

My solution was to sell the WE Esprit. ;–) If the detent on the Esprit were a bit stronger it might have ameliorated the problem. I liked everything else about the knife. Best of luck with your Esprit.

Thanks for the reply! I agree, the detent is a tad on the light side. I've adjusted the lockbar tightness on other WE knives in the past, but I think if the Esprit's is any tighter it won't be front deployable. Might tinker with it and and see then. Cheers!

I think they kept the detent lighter for the front-flipping action. This is one reason that I don't like multiple deployment issues on knives. While some knives manage to work as well from all methods, I often find knives that are better-tuned to one method and another suffering as a result.

I found the detent on both my WE Esprit and my Civivi Sokoke to be lighter than I like on the thumb studs. Both work much better as front flippers and I'd honestly rather not have the studs in the way. I'd probably feel more strongly about it if I ever had them snag and open inappropriately but that hasn't happened. (While I ended up selling the Esprit, my Sokoke is still in rotation.)
