I'm guessing the kevlar is the thread? Very nice. I like the look of braiding when done well, not sure if that is considered braiding, but it's really cool.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, Kevlar is the thread. The stitch I used for these, I've been calling the "crow's foot," and it seems quite strong, and gives the sheath a bit of rigidity.
Gregorio - I do glue them together. I use EcoWeld, a water-based contact cement. This whole endeavor is fairly new to me... I've been sewing pretty dresses, etc. since I was a little girl, and then I met a guy who makes swords and knives, who was already using leather for his sheaths (using rivets), and it seemed like a good way to apply that experience. I'm figuring this all out from scratch, so I know what I'm coming up with is likely a little unconventional. I welcome any constructive criticism.
Unconventional is nice, also nice to see the fairer sex representing here. I see amazing work at LW.net from woman all the time, but not so much here.
To clarify, there are plenty of fine knife toting ladies here, just not any leather crafters that I'm aware of. Oh, and also, I'm not creepy. I'm very happily married with four daughters. Maybe silly, but I feel compelled to mention that.
Now then, how do you stitch the interior on the handle piece??
It's a basic for sewing, but I don't often see it employed with leather. Turns out to be useful though! I'm working on a sword sheath right now that is downright questionable, albeit not bad, and will be making a handle for it tonight!
...not my best work, but it's for a series of blades from another certain member of this site called the "Stairwell Defenders." So... whipping it up in a day and having that pass inspection is ok.
