Robert Horrigan...partime bladesmith, and brother of John Horrigan MS....killed in Iraq June 17, 2005

Godspeed brother!

Horrigan was killed in combat operations on June 17. The Army reported he died in Western Iraq after being attacked with enemy small-arms fire during combat operations.

He earned more than 30 honors, including two bronze stars, a meritorious service medal and ajoint service commendation medal.

Also killed was Master Sgt. Michael L. McNulty, 36, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Both men were stationed at U.S. Army Special Operations Headquarters in Fort Bragg, N.C.

Horrigan grew up in Sunset Valley where some of his family remains. Horrigan's family declined to be interviewed.

"Your support is appreciated as we mourn the loss of a loving husband, devoted father, caring son and selfless soldier. We are sincerely touched by your concern and interest in Robert's life, his career and his sacrifice for our country," a statement released by the family read.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, daughter Courtney, his mother Mary, his sister Lisa Shine, twin brother John and brother Daniel.

Horrigan's life was remembered Tuesday by the small Sunset Valley community where the flag at City Hall flew at half-staff.

Across the street from the Horrigan's home, another family feels the pain.

"Oh gosh, this is very sad for me. It's a tragedy," neighbor Carmen Vallejo Castillo said.

Her sister's grandson, Austin Marine Nicholas Perez was killed last September.

"Everytime we'd see him, he'd greet us with a hug and kiss and we'll never forget that. Everytime we see Nick's picture, he's right there for us," Castillo said.

Actions of love and words of support now spread across the street.

"Pray, that helps a lot," Castillo said.

Horrigan began his Army career in May 1984 as an infantryman. He previously served with the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. He left active duty and re-enlisted and was assigned as a team leader and Ranger instructor at the 5th Ranger Training Battalion.

After eight months of training, he graduated from the Special Forces program and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) where he was weapons sergeant.

Statement from Horrigan family

The Horrigan family would like to thank friends and members of the Special Operations Community for their sincere expressions of sympathy during this very difficult time. Your support is appreciated as we mourn the loss of Robert who was a loving husband, a devoted father, a caring son and a selfless soldier.

We are sincerely touched by your concern and interest in Robert’s life, his career and his sacrifice for our country. He gave his life for this country – protecting our freedoms, our families and America’s way of life. Those with whom he served are willing to do the same. Robert always expressed the utmost respect and pride for his fellow brothers-in-arms.

We appreciate you keeping us, and all the other families who have endured the loss of a loved one, in your thoughts and prayers during our time of grief. May God bless the troops who serve to keep us safe.

I've never met the Horrigans, just heard of them as knifemaker brothers, featured in a magazine article some years back. I mourn for all those lost in desperate times. His decorations indicate he was passionate and true to his calling and gave the ultimate sacrifice. My thanks also to all those who go to dangerous grounds to do what most of us cannot and will not do. My prayers and wishes go to his family, to those who knew him and loved him.

May God give the family comfort in this time of need.Let it be known that his death was not in vain, and IMHO there is no greater man that has layed his life down in battle for this "Great Land of Ours".He is truley a HERO in its finest form.He will not be forgotten.Just a thought,as a knifemaker he has left things that will be around for a long, long time, reminding people of who and what he was!! Again-- He Will Not Be Forgotten. My prayers are with the family of the Hero.So sorry for their loss, and when you think about it,our loss too.

sad loss! We should be proud though. May his family find peace with this hard loss.
Man!

Condolences go out to his family and friends.

RIP, my brother in arms !

At times like these...a man reaches for something to say...something that will matter...to those in pain...

There is nothing that will take it away...nothing that will ease it...nothing to bridge the span between life and loss...

We read about this man...things we did not know...and all of the things in our life seem small. The petty gripes that seemed so important the moment before...melt away.

There is a sorrow that aches in my chest...but there is another thing there along with the hurt.

It is a fierce pride. Not in country or ideas of patriotism. But in the men and women who are the best of us.

This man was better than me.

My deepest prayers rest with the family of this good man.

God Speed.

Shane

Damn, is it ever going to end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish there was some kind of meds they could give us older vets that would perk us up enough so we could go fight instead of just sacrificing the young guys. They're just beginning life. Damn!

May his family have strength during this tragic time. God has another American hero in his presence. May God protect our soldiers in harms way.

God Bless Mr. Horrigan's family and all the families that have lost members defending this great nation all over the world. As it has been stated time and time again, freedom is neither free nor cheap and these brave men and women have given their all so we at home can rasie our families and live the lives so many in this world will never experience. They have made a great difference in not only the way things are here at home, but all across this world, their bravery and sacrifice has made life better in keeping evil from prefailing.I salute you all, and my tears fall every time I hear of another one lost, may God be with them all and the families that are suffering during these times.

my oldest is joining here soon because he wants to..My niece is in Iraq right now.
god help them all and he is with them, and sad to say it has to be done....

my best wishing for the family,
they can be proud , it's not much but it sounds like he was
doing what he wanted to do..so they can be proud for sure.

I've looked over his website a couple times over the last few days and have really been at a loss for words.
He seemed to have a gift for knifemaking, and his military achievements prove that he was a hell of a soldier. I'm sure his contributions to his family leave all of that in the shadows. I wish he could have been a part of our group here, and my prayers go out for him and his family.
We lost another great one :(
