I was taken aback this morning when I got a note from Joan Poythress saying John Poythress was killed in a motor-cycle wreck.

Another good friend and excellent maker has left us too early. Got to know John and his wife Joan via the Trackrock hammerins that Carl and Mark put on. two finer people would be hard to find.

You can see some of his fine work in Knives 2005.

If anyone is interested in the arrangements or wishes to contact Joan (his wife) email me - gusk@bellsouth.net

Yes
Injuries from the wreck.

That's a shame. :(

I didn't know John Poythress, but was familiar with his work. And it was exceptional !

Our condolences and prayers go out to his family.

RIP John

John's work is very familiar on the Knife Network, and I enjoyed helping Joan in her photography quest.

The sudden loss (he was doing well, then died in his sleep) stunned everyone. John was in my thoughts a lot last week.

This year seems to have taken a larger toll on knifemakers than I remember.

Thanks, Gus, for taking notice and paying tribute.

I first met John and Joan at the southeast show in 2003, and I was fortunate enough to have a table next to them at the Blade show this year.
Iv'e been sitting here looking at the screen trying to find the right words but I'm afraid I can't.
John was a fine knifemaker and a true gentleman. He will be sadly missed.

My sincere condolences to his family and all who knew him.

We knew John and Joan through the NC Guild and recieved an e-mail from a member the other day about it since we are with this Guild as well. One thing I can say is Joan was/is extremely involved with this fine orginization of knifemakers, the lady is a true champion! I didn't know John as well as Geno did, but at Pop's Knives when Pop would have his knifemakers demonstrations...they were always there and alot of fun. God bless. :(

The knife making community will be diminished by the passing of John. I did not know this quiet man for long but in that time he acquired my admiration and respect for his craftsmanship and gentle demeanor. He and his beautiful lady, Joan, were instrumental in creating the camaraderie enjoyed by the knifemakers of the southeast. John, may God hold you in his arms! ---Sandy---

oh my gosh. I didnt know him as a friend but I knew he was a spectacular knifemaker! I am taken back because he was one of the makers so close to me.
My prayers are sent to his loved ones
