We should have a 'sticky'.

Interestingly enough... how come we don't have a 'sticky' thread sharing what we here as a group consider the as necessary gear for the outdoors. Why not a 'sticky' for what we'd consider a quality 1st aid kit. Etc.

I understand that opinions would vary in those particular threads, but it sure as heck would be a great starting point for new members here looking for the simplest of information.

Thanks.

I think we have to many "sticky" threads at the top. It's almost 1/4 of the first page.

I suggest starting a thread on it to get others input. That's what this forum is all about.

The moderators of this forum are waaaaayyyyyy too sticky-happy, as it is. We have stickies for chat times, stickies for book lists... This forum is literally overburdened with too many stickies, making it unnecessarily harder to use for anybody without a huge screen. We should NOT have another sticky. We should have the sense to consolidate the NINE stickies into one or two stickies which point to all the others, and then we should get rid of all the rest of the stickies.

This forum is like a vending machine:

Insert coin (Start a new thread on _________ )

Receive bacon burger (Replies with a wealth of info)

I think my computer will vomit on me if it sees one more sticky here. Not every subject is a special snowflake.

The reason we don't have a sticky on a first aid kit is the same reason we don't have a sticky on the best woodcraft knife or the best sleeping bag for Colorado in January. Each is a separate topic, and this forum is a place for threads on different topics. Organizing the information you're interested in is your job. Ours is just supplying the information. :)

We probably could consolidate a few stickies.

Yes, definitely need a sticky on what is the best gear. Right after we decide the best knife design, steel, handle material, etc for wilderness survival.

I think we need a W&SS sticky sub-forum. I'm actually half serious. They would be there for all the people that wander in, but the rest of us wouldn't have to scroll down through them every time we load the page.

It's either brilliant or rediculous, or maybe both; a brilliant way of handling something that's gotten rediculous. I'm not even sure myself...

We need a sticky sticky: a sticky to point us to each of the threads that's a sticky now, but won't be once the Master Directory Sticky goes up :D

Exactly. And we could call it a FAQ, but always be sure to use the Brit pronunciation "fah-queue".

This is my thinking, I don't know why we couldn't have a single sticky, with links to all the individual topics currently stickied. We could even add more of these subtopics if necessary. But at least we wouldn't have the clogs up there.

I got a good laugh out of that!:D

Actually a sub-forum FAQ with informational stickies would be nice. If somebody posts a great informational post in the regular WSS forum, someone could recommend them to cut and paste that into one of the appropriate stickies in the FAQ sub-forum. First, it would really clean up the stickies on the main page; second, it would give new members an area to view quality info easily if they can't search or google what they're looking for. About the only sticky we would need would be the one pointing to the FAQ sub-forum and ROE (oops, Rules of Engagement) to post in the sticky categories.

There have been some great informational posts and if those were pulled and captured into a corresponding sticky, it would be a great resource to easily access. I've worked "knowledge management" before and it's truly a PITA!

Just looking at the main WSS page, you can have close to 30 sickies on just the first page...that should be enough to cover all the general informational issues, reoccurring events, one-time/short events (removed upon completion) and a whole host of WSS informational stickies:

Gear reviews (packs, stoves, shelters/tents/hammocks, etc.)
Bushcraft skills (knots, plant I.D/uses, carving, traps, etc.)
BoB Sticky
Urban Survival Sticky
Backpacking 101
Essentials
PSK
FAK
Footwear/Clothing
Fire kits/fire starting

If self-policed, members could spot new posts that fit those categories and recommend to the poster to cut/paste the info into the sticky post.

I think it's a great idea...

A sticky organizing threads would need to be closed, available only to a moderator to update the lists, otherwise, it would quickly become almost as hard to search as the whole subforum.

We could have a few stickies, organizing areas of interest, for example:
THE RULES
THE CALENDAR
THE ACTIVITIES

Here's how our current stickies might be combined under these:

THE RULES

This is W&SS not "The Post Anything I Want Because I Only Read This Forum" Forum
Quick Note to makers

THE CALENDAR

Calendar of W&SS Gatherings and Events

THE ACTIVITIES

The Official Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!
Pay it forward 2010
The W&SS BOOKLIST STICKY
Skills - Put Up or Shut Up 2010
Search BF with Google, Links, Online Survival Videos, and Wilderness Wiki Merged Here

Under this scheme, each current sticky would remain a thread just as it is, but it would be allowed to float up or down the thread list, since going to the new organizer stickies, you could retrieve it.

ROCK6 suggested these categories.

Gear reviews (packs, stoves, shelters/tents/hammocks, etc.)
Bushcraft skills (knots, plant I.D/uses, carving, traps, etc.)
BoB Sticky
Urban Survival Sticky
Backpacking 101
Essentials
PSK
FAK
Footwear/Clothing
Fire kits/fire starting

Each of them could be the title of a thread in THE ACTIVITIES sticky, and each would have links to threads covering those subjects.

I gotta admit, when the sticky threads get long, I won't go through all of it. My attention span is too short! Some people get bothered when the same threads come up a lot. I don't mind them because I can either contribute or skip them, not a big deal. I'd rather see a dozen posts on the same thing than have it get lost in a sticky.

I would go even farther, Esav. I'd consolidate down to perhaps a rules sticky, and an everything-else sticky. We don't need a special calendar sticky, separate from an activities sticky.

Even narrowed down to rules and everything else – I hope K.C. comes to realize that "W&SS is not "The Post Anything I Want Because I Only Read This Forum" Forum" shouldn't be a permanent sticky. Get the word out, guide the participants to undestand and respect these goals, get the subforum moderators on board, and then un-sticky it. There's ultimately little need for a rules sticky unless the forum has special rules unique to only that specific forum, as is the case with the political forum.
