Ill start this review off by saying that as I was growing up I always had pocketknives coming and going. During this time my dad always had the same knife, which I had always admired, it was an older endura in ats 55. In my youth eyes that knife was the sign of manhood with its massive size, durability and construction. He still carries that very same knife to this day. That knife was simply put just a straight workhorse, used for everything from cutting fruit, to everything else imaginable. So I had always had this unexplainable attraction to the endura. I had to have one sooner or later. Well after loosing my calypso jr. I decided another spyderco was definitely in line. So I looked immediately at the endura 4, and settled on the wave version. I ordered this knife from new graham and it took exactly a week to receive the knife. The anticipation built and built until finally the man in the brown suit came to my door. Upon receiving this knife I immediately ripped open the package. I was disappointed to see at first the box for my knife had been damaged in shipping but upon inspection my knife was unscathed. I was impressed upon first sight, just as I imagined. I really like the shape of the blade with the wave on the top, although some may think its ugly, its a thing of beauty to me. This knife, like all the spydercos I’ve handled just screams “USE ME”.

Well I’ve had and carried this knife for 3 weeks now, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The opening and closing was a little stiff out of the box but after playing with it for a while it’s as smooth as butter. The wave makes it a huge pleasure to use especially if you have your hands occupied which I find happening at work. I found that with no problems at all I could have it clipped in the side pocket, waistband, or rear pocket and wave it reliably from any of these positions. It does take a little practice to get it to the point where it opens fully at first, but once you get it down it truly becomes second nature. It comes shaving sharp out of the box, like all spyderco’s and loves to bite as well J. The handle shape is better than my father’s older endura and seems thicker top to bottom but not side-to-side, and more durable as well. It also has a more ergonomical shape/feel to it. Not to mention the volcano grip patterns make it easy to hold on too even with wet/ sweaty hands. The pocket clip is nice and retains the knife nicely without loosening up from usage thus far. The pocket clip is tip up/tip down left or right hand reversible, which is a nice feature as well. The knife also rides very well in the pocket despite its large size, and sits low down in the pocket, and the black color of the clip can make it almost disappear to a quick glance in dark jeans. This knife hasn’t seen super hard usage yet but has seen usage at least everyday in the work and home environment and has passed it all with flying colors, needing only minor touch ups to restore its sharpness. Some examples of usage are cardboard, tape and other common wearhouse items. This knife also has an adjustable pivot, which is also a major plus as you don’t have to worry about it ever being too loose or too tight. One thing about these enduras is that they are a nice size; definitely a handful and I feel that it fits my hand very well overall. I’ve read here many people saying the size of the handle is not a very suitable match for their hand, however I have not experienced any uncomfort and feel its almost a perfect fit. Very comfortable, and I don’t have what I would consider to be very large hands so maybe it’s just my preference. One thing I noticed about the size is you may want to watch who you have the knife out around as it may send sheeple running :D. There is no lateral or vertical blade play whatsoever in this knife that I can detect when locked in the open position, and everything sits flush when locked.

Overall this is a great knife and definitely has the look and the feel of a real workhorse. I believe it’s a great deal at the $60 price tag most places ask, seeing as the knife is solid, locks solid and no doubt will last a long time. The wave feature is great for when you need the knife out quick and it is a lot of fun to play with when you’re bored. If your looking to purchase a knife with an almost 4 blade that will be a workhorse, I would look no further than the WE4.

Pictures to come
