There is a whole bunch of these at the Maine state museum. Went there once as a youngen but never bothered to look much. Want very much!

Dang!I'll need to make a trip over there to take a gander! That label is MINT! Any scythe stuff there?

not sure, but itd surprise me if there wasnt. I found this picture looking for Maine and wedge pattern axes. This was the best one I foud =)

I've seen better....;)

Now that you posted this, I bet operator is already negotiating to buy them out of their axes! :D

He just bought their mortgage from their bank and now he's threatening to foreclose if they don't part with the wedge.

Wow... now I need to plan a trip to Augusta. I was just there this night, dangit.

Btw, G-Pig, Forty-Two, has anyone ever seen the Oakland Musuem? That might be worth checking out too, I'm not sure though. Only seen it open once, never been in there.

Edit: I found some info online, that place is open tomorrow at 1:30. Going to check it out. Sorry for the hijack. :foot:

I'll be making a trip to Oakland soon to scope out the antique shops for any old documents, catalogs, advertising materials, etc. pertaining to the old edged tool factories there. Maine's heritage as an edged tool manufacturing center is something I'm very proud of--hopefully there'll be some scythe-related stuff! :)

Those are beautiful looking! Got confused when you guys mentioned Oakland, then I realized it's Oakland Maine, not CA...

I'd recomend talking with the historical society, or look in the Oakland library, before anything else. Oakland has one antique shop, and one on the Belgrade line. Nothings ever there, tools or documents. Now that I think about it, I've never been able to find anything pertaining to Oakland edge tool factories, besides the very rare axe. Probably because they were small businesses. You could ask for copies of any info they may have. I used to know a ex employee of Emerson and Stevens, and was vaguely related, but he passed a few winters ago. Wish I'd talked to him more.

There were a lot of manufacturers along the river in the Oakland/Waterville region in the 18-1900's, some of them quite large. Funny that there's not a ton of stuff left in the immediate area--I sure hope that the historical society/library snatched up as many of the records as they could. I've found some photographs in a .pdf by the historical society and you'd be amazed at the size of some of the plants. I think it was the North Wayne Tool Co. (better known as Little Giant post-1900) that had literally an entire building devoted to axe production, one for scythes, etc. etc.

The main reason I'll be in the area is I'll be picking up some Mini Rex rabbit breeding stock from a guy there, so even if I can't find anything cool at the antique shop I'll still be there on business. :p
